The State, Local, and Higher Education (SLED) Go-To-Market (GTM) Legal Team supports Workday’s SLED business on a wide range of issues, from contracts and legal strategy to compliance and risk management.
The Assistant General Counsel, (U.S. Public Sector, SLED), will drive optimization of our overall SLED legal strategy, oversee the development and delivery of legal terms that provide customer-focused solutions, and enable our strategic innovation and revenue growth objectives. This role will lead cross-functional initiatives aligned to our GTM strategy for SLED and support strategic growth initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional judgment and business insight and be comfortable, effective, and persuasive in dealing with customers, partners, senior management, and business and legal partners, and leading as an innovative change agent to drive process and cultural innovation.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with leaders across the sales organization to support strategic growth initiatives.
Innovate and operationalize the legal approach and legal strategy for SLED and new types of SLED-specific strategic relationships.
Lead and drive valuable SLED transactions, including negotiation with resellers, partners and customers, and support for professional services and CX agreements, assignments, amendments, and add-on transactions.
Provide proactive strategic advice and guidance to internal teams regarding business and legal issues and risks.
Assist in implementing legal efficiencies to support the SLED professional services and CX business unit and improve contract processes and operations in that segment.
Help build and improve contract templates and negotiation playbooks; provide internal training specific to SLED for services sales, services operations, contract operations, and the broader GTM legal team.
Partner effectively with deal operations, sales, finance, revenue recognition, privacy, security, and contracts operations, and manage external counsel as required.
About You Basic Qualifications
J.D. Degree and membership in at least 1 U.S. State bar.
15+ years of experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm or in-house/public sector legal department.
10+ years of specific experience supporting and negotiating in (or with) the SLED industry sector.
Other Qualifications
Exceptional contract negotiation and drafting skills, comfortable with leading fast-paced customer-facing transactions, preferably with enterprise software/SaaS experience.
Strong ability to influence, advise, and advocate for the business’ interests.
Exceptional written and oral communication skills for legal and non-legal audiences at all levels.
Superior judgment and the ability to advise clients in complex needs of the business.
Ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and lead cross-functional collaboration.
Strategic thinking, problem solving, and risk assessment aligned with business objectives.
Ability to anticipate, identify and analyze legal risks, driving solutions with minimal guidance.
Project management skills; drive process improvements using best practices and lean principles.
Willingness to drive creative solutions, build efficient processes, and challenge the status quo when needed.

This role may be eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual stock grants. Primary Location Base Pay Range: $205,800 USD - $308,700 USD
Additional US Location(s) Base Pay Range: $186,200 USD - $330,700 USD
