As a member of the Office of Safety and Compliance, you’ll drive the safety of our autonomous vehicle efforts and thereby revolutionize transportation. You will empower our team to deliver complex projects to ensure safety and compliance, while coordinating interactions with other teams and external organizations. The position reports to: Director - Office of Safety and Compliance (OSaC), in the Legal Department.
Responsibilities
- Develop and assess partner safety cases for vehicle platforms, driving technical safety requirements and processes based on AV industry standards and best practices (e.g., UL 4600, ISO 26262 - Functional Safety, ISO 21448 - SOTIF).
- Support evaluation of outside partner AV safety programs through audits, testing, assessments, and documented engineering reports.
- Conduct onsite public-road and closed-course testing and analysis to quantify safety readiness, incident investigation, risk, compliance, and safety decision making.
- Use Quantified Risk Management (QRM) tools (FMEDA, DFMEA, FTA, DFA) to perform quantified risk assessments for safety issues with partner vehicles, operation, and cybersecurity systems.
- Develop and monitor vehicle performance and risk metrics to support grounding, pausing, and return-to-operation decisions on the Lyft platform.
- Participate in autonomous vehicle safety process development and support safety considerations in collaboration with Business and Legal teams.
- Support partners’ safety incident investigations, drive resolution, and maintain incident and issue reports.
- Ensure Lyft’s AV platforms meet FMVSS regulations, state codes, reporting, and applicable standards and orders.
- Maintain a comprehensive source-of-truth for safety audits, assessments, testing, risk, and compliance requirements.
- Conduct technical engineering reviews and audits for compliance with tech requirements of new and existing products and processes.
- Create and maintain documentation of safety assessments, risk decisions, and compliance.
- Collaborate with Legal Compliance to coordinate tech compliance with operational and reporting requirements.
- Occasional domestic travel, sometimes with short notice.
Experience / Qualifications
- 5+ years in systems engineering, ADAS/ADK design and development, sensor design (RADAR/LIDAR/Camera) or functional safety engineering.
- Direct experience in AV functional safety and SOTIF approaches and V&V methodologies.
- Experience with validation and verification of complex autonomous systems.
- Experience with emerging EU/UK homologation regulations for autonomous vehicles and ADS/ADK equipment.
- Technical skills including:
- Systems engineering and architecture of complex systems.
- Design, execution, and analysis of validation and verification testing; data analysis and reporting.
- Hands-on knowledge of UL 4600, ISO 26262, 21448, IEC 61508 and other standards.
- Safety analysis methodologies: HARA, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, Hazard Operability Study.
- Experience with requirements management, traceability, and decomposition (knowledge of JAMA is a plus).
- Soft skills: leadership, communication, collaboration, problem solving, attention to detail.
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Automotive or Computer).
- Preferred: Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

Lyft values in-office collaboration and supports a hybrid schedule. The role is in-office on a hybrid schedule—3 days per week in the office (Mon, Wed, Thu). Hybrid roles offer flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year.
The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $148,000 - $185,000. Salary ranges depend on qualifications, experience, and location. This range is not inclusive of potential equity, bonus, or benefits. Total compensation varies with factors including location and experience.
