Base pay range Job Description And Duties
The Business Litigation Section represents state agencies and officials in matters concerning the business of government and government regulation of business. We are recruiting a supervisor who wants to lead, coach, and manage a team of attorneys, be part of the section’s management team, and work on a variety of complex and novel legal problems.
Our Work Includes
Defending constitutional and statutory challenges to state laws and regulations.
Defending decisions of state tax agencies and regulators of the fintech, insurance, and real estate industries.
Providing advice and representing state agencies and officers in a wide range of public contracting and commercial disputes.
In Business Litigation, the SDAG is a dedicated supervisor and ordinarily does not carry a caseload. Candidates should have substantial civil litigation and appellate experience; excellent writing and editing skills; good judgment; strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills; an interest in managing people; and an interest in learning new areas of law. Subject matter expertise in bankruptcy, tax, insurance, real estate, and the like is not required.
Supervising Deputies Are Expected To
Ensure that their team members are providing effective, efficient, and high-quality legal representation for our clients, planning litigation, meeting deadlines, maintaining and updating case files, communicating, collaborating and maintaining productive working relationships with peers, section management, and other members of the office, clients, other counsel, and court officials, timely completing administrative duties, and adhering to professional and government ethics requirements.
Set reasonable performance expectations for team members, coach team members to improve skills and take on greater challenges, provide immediate feedback, regularly and timely prepare written evaluations of the performance of team members, take appropriate action including disciplinary action when a team member fails to meet performance standards, and recognize, reward and celebrate excellence.
Assist team members in developing their professional skills and attaining their professional goals.
Hold regular team meetings and meetings with individual deputies and maintain a culture of teamwork, high performance, and mutual support.
Maintain excellent relationships with all members of the section, clients, staff, and administration.
Learn the administrative processes of the Department and use this knowledge to support the team.
Participate in the management of the section, including keeping the SAAG informed of case and personnel developments, case assignment and workload distribution, implementing management directives, hiring, promotion, program evaluation, section policy-making, and strategic planning.
Occasionally take on case work, supervise cross-team cases, and serve as acting SAAG.
Adhere to the highest standards of public service, client service, professionalism, civility, and the ethical practice of law.
Currently, all deputies have the option of 100% telework or work in the office but must reside in California and must appear in person as operational need requires.

The Deputy Attorney General classifications qualify for a “Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary ( Hiring Above Minimum Policy ).
The Starting Salary For Each Classification Will Be
Deputy Attorney General Superv isor (8 years): $14,228
New to State candidates in the DAG series will be hired at the starting HAM salary of the classifications.
