Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
We are an established real estate law firm with offices across California. Our firm is seeking an accomplished, visionary financial executive to serve as its first Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in San Diego. The CFO is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for shaping and executing the firm’s financial strategy, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and driving operational excellence across all financial functions. This role will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the firm’s finance, accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting, while also serving as a trusted advisor to the COO, Managing Partners, and the broader leadership team.

Our firm is seeking an accomplished, visionary financial executive to serve as its first Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in San Diego. The CFO is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for shaping and executing the firm’s financial strategy, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and driving operational excellence across all financial functions. This role will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the firm’s finance, accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting, while also serving as a trusted advisor to the COO, Managing Partners, and the broader leadership team.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of leading finance and accounting functions in a complex, multi-office professional services environment—ideally within the legal sector. The CFO will be instrumental in supporting the firm’s growth, profitability, and long-term vision, while maintaining the highest standards of integrity, compliance, and client service.

Compensation
$225k-$295k /Annually
Key Duties And Responsibilities
Serve as a strategic partner to the COO and executive leadership, contributing to the development and execution of the firm’s overall business strategy.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Oversee the accurate and timely preparation of financial reporting operations, including accounting, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, billing, and collections.
Direct the preparation and analysis of timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, and key performance indicators for internal and external stakeholders.
Develop and implement robust financial controls, risk management policies, and compliance frameworks to safeguard the firm’s assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
Drive the evolution and optimization of financial systems, processes, and technologies to support scalability, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making.
Direct the preparation and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns, including the preparation of Schedule K=1s for the firm’s Equity Partners. Stay abreast of changes in tax regulations and ensure firm’s compliance.
Advise on complex financial matters, including mergers and acquisitions, capital investments, partnership structures, and tax strategies.
Collaborate with practice group leaders and administrative teams to align financial management with the firm’s strategic goals and client service objectives.
Lead the annual budgeting process, long-range financial planning, and scenario modeling to support the firm’s growth and profitability targets.
Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and other financial partners.
Provide support to Risk Management and HR in the coordination of insurance renewals, including assistance with ERISA compliance and other related audits.
Ensure the retention and development of top finance talent, and champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within the finance function.
Maintain the highest standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professionalism in all financial matters.
Provide clear, concise communication of complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders, including partners, attorneys, and clients.
Proactively identify and pursue opportunities for strategic partnerships, cost savings, and revenue enhancement.
Support the firm’s highly responsive, client-focused culture by delivering exemplary financial services to all constituencies.
Travel as necessary to support firm operations and initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a senior executive role (CFO, VP of Finance, Director, or equivalent) in a professional services environment.
Demonstrated experience managing finance and accounting functions in a large, multi-office organization.
Proven ability to lead, develop, and inspire high-performing teams.
Strong track record of strategic financial planning, budgeting, and analysis.
Deep knowledge of financial controls, compliance, and risk management best practices.
Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Impeccable ethics and experience handling highly sensitive and confidential information.
Advanced proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and data analytics.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
MBA, CPA, or other relevant advanced degree or certification.
Experience as a senior finance executive in a law firm or legal services organization.
Direct experience with law firm partnership structures, trust accounting, and legal industry financial regulations.
Demonstrated success in leading financial system implementations or major process transformations.
Legal experience or a strong understanding of the legal industry is highly desirable.
Schedule
Position is full-time at 40 hours/week. Our business hours are 8:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday.
We currently offering a hybrid work model for select positions within the Firm. New hire employees who are offered a hybrid schedule will complete the majority of their onboarding and training in-office as deemed necessary for the position by the firm before transitioning to a hybrid schedule, subject to approval by their supervisor.
