Leads the team that drives the development of Vanguard's brokerage, investment, and point-in-time advice methodology according to broader business goals, policies, and competitive strategy. Ensures methodology is implemented appropriately across relevant areas of Personal Investor and the Vanguard brokerage platform.
Core Responsibilities:
In alignment with Regulation Best Interest (Reg BI), partners with Investment Strategy Group (ISG) to adapt methodology guardrails specific to Personal Investor clients. Accountable to Advice Policy Committee and Broker Dealer Oversight Committee to deliver recommendations on products, either as a committee member or meeting participant. Collaborates with business training teams to develop crew training materials and conversation guides aligned with guardrails.
Develops the capability within Personal Investor Investment Product to generate an independent “house view” methodology and thought leadership, primarily for non-Vanguard Fund / ETF solutions (e.g., cash, margin, fully paid lending).
Enables the Personal Investor division to refresh, improve, and implement new methodology and guardrails across the self-directed client base. Creates educational thought leadership on products primarily used by Personal Investor clients.
Fosters collaboration with ISG and enterprise partners to develop “house view” methodology and thought leadership. Works with OGC to develop investment product content that is risk-smart.
Manages a portfolio of “house view” methodology and thought leadership pieces. Engages stakeholders (e.g., Marketing, Self-Directed) to ensure relevance, use, and prioritization for future development.
Surveys competitor thought leadership and client insight forums to support ideation of new concepts.
Sets goals for the Investment Product capability focused on improving investor outcomes, separate from sales goals, to promote product adoption with independent, fair, and balanced recommendations.
Collaborates on implementation plans related to investment processes, policies, and procedures, considering all downstream impacts when updating Vanguard's methodology.
Hires, evaluates, and supervises team members. Provides guidance and training, sets performance standards, reviews performance, and makes compensation decisions following HR policies.
Serves as a subject matter expert on financial markets, legal, tax, and regulatory issues affecting Vanguard's methodology. Oversees initiatives to enhance Vanguard's methodology.
Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of ten years related work experience; eight years in investments, analytics, or portfolio management with supervisory experience preferred.
Undergraduate degree or equivalent; graduate degree preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
CFP and/or CFA preferred.
Requires a regulatory license or registration (e.g., FINRA, state), as determined by Compliance based on role duties.
