The Director of State Attorneys General & Government Affairs will serve as the strategic hub of the firm’s State Attorneys General practice, driving client engagement, issue management, and forward-looking strategies for a portfolio of clients retained on flat-fee arrangements. The Director will identify priority states and Attorneys General relevant to each client, shape tailored engagement strategies, and ensure consistent follow-through for outreach, reporting, and logistical deliverables. This role monitors political, regulatory, and legal developments at the state level, translating them into actionable strategies, and positions the firm’s AG team for success in client advocacy and external visibility. By coordinating between clients, attorneys, practice leadership, and AG stakeholders, the Director enhances the impact of client representation and the firm’s standing within the State Attorneys General community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Client Management & Strategic Leadership: Lead strategist for a portfolio of flat-fee clients engaged for State AG representation; identify priority states and Attorneys General most relevant to each client’s interests, enforcement risks, and industry; develop tailored client strategies including messaging and engagement plans; draft client-specific talking points, issue analyses, and strategic recommendations; supervise the Senior Manager in targeted outreach to AG offices and report outcomes; ensure client service is seamless with strategic foresight and consistent execution. Policy & Issue Monitoring: Continuously monitor AG enforcement actions, legislation, and policy developments that may impact clients; provide clients and attorneys with clear, actionable insights on developments in relevant states; direct the Senior Manager to track state activity and incorporate into client deliverables. Conferences & Events: Lead strategic preparation for key AG conferences (e.g., NAAG, RAGA, DAGA, AGA); identify AG offices and officials most critical to each client and set engagement targets; draft high-level strategy documents and talking points; supervise the Senior Manager to prepare briefing books, manage invites, and coordinate meetings; review conference outcomes and leverage touchpoints for ongoing engagement; organize annual client events in collaboration with AG Associations (including fundraisers and meetings for various associations). Management: Supervise and mentor the Senior Manager of Government Relations, set priorities, provide strategic direction, ensure outreach aligns with client and practice needs, and ensure timely reporting and documentation of interactions; provide leadership to associates, coordinators, and support staff; collaborate with practice group leaders and partners to grow the State AG practice. Thought Leadership & Visibility: Draft and oversee thought leadership content demonstrating the firm’s expertise in State AG issues; direct the Senior Manager and marketing team in distribution of materials; build and maintain relationships with Attorneys General, senior staff, and policy stakeholders to position the firm as a trusted partner. Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities: Lead teams effectively, build productive relationships, excellent written and verbal communication, good judgment and discretion, ability to influence at all levels, identify issues and develop practical solutions, hands-on tactical approach with strategic thinking, adaptability in a fast-paced environment, and strong supervisory skills. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in political science, law, public administration, or related field; JD or advanced degree beneficial; minimum of eight (8) years in government affairs, legal practice, or related field; experience in managing client relationships and monitoring policy developments at the state level.
