Avantax, Inc. (Avantax), a unique community within Cetera Holdings, is seeking a Director, Tax Practice who will be responsible for managing tax practices in various locations which focus on tax planning, preparation, and compliance for small businesses and individuals. Avantax is a wealth management business which partners with CPAs, EAs, and Tax Professionals for the purposes of providing their tax and accounting clients with wealth management advice. This role requires expertise in tax business operations, strategic growth, tax compliance and planning, and team leadership skills to guide a team of tax professionals towards the goal of creating a more holistic and comprehensive solution for clients through the creation of interdependency between these two complementary service lines. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned tax leader with a proven track record in scaling tax practices, optimizing operational efficiencies, and ensuring regulatory compliance while fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture. CPA license in strongly preferred. What you will do: Strategic Leadership & Business Growth Manage and develop a team of tax professionals and work collaboratively across the Cetera organization to build out and scale the tax services offering within Cetera. Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for tax practice growth and integration within Avantax. Create collaboration between wealth advisory and tax practices to identify opportunities for the clients and the Firm. Liaise between local practice offices and internal corporate departments to ensure the team is equipped to meet client needs and adheres with internal compliance and reporting. Participate in firm-wide initiatives and contribute to the overall growth and success of the firm. Collaboration with Firm Leadership: Work with Firm leadership on the execution of the strategy for the tax practice Manage IT and Service platforms across all acquired tax practices. Collaborate with Corporate Development and Integrations on acquisitions of the tax practices, including due diligence, planning, and post-acquisition integration. Manage and develop the team of tax professionals at all levels. Foster a collaborative and high-performing culture within the tax department across all locations. Provide ongoing training and support to ensure team stays current with evolving tax laws. Operational Excellence & Compliance: Ensure processes for all tax filings and advice comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Ensure the accuracy of all tax filings and work products before submission. Implement standardized processes across practices to maintain accuracy, efficiency and compliance. Continuously evaluate and mitigate tax-related risks to protect clients and the firm. Uphold ethical standards and industry best practices in all tax-related matters. Ensure teams stay current with the latest changes in tax laws and regulations and ensure the firm’s compliance with these updates as well as adherence to overall firm policies and practices. Industry Representation & Leadership: Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and seminars as necessary to grow the visibility and reputation of the Avantax Solutions brand in the tax community. Build strong external relationships with industry peers, regulatory bodies and key stakeholders. What you need to have: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Minimum of 10 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Proven track record in managing and developing a tax team. Strong understanding of current tax laws and practice regulatory requirements. Expertise in tax software and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively. What is nice to have: CPA license is strongly preferred. Compensation: The base annual salary range for this role is $175,000 to $200,000 plus a performance-based bonus. Base annual salary depends on a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, years and depth of experience, certifications, and location.
