Overview The Longwood Collective seeks a seasoned attorney to join its executive team as General Counsel. The General Counsel serves as the organization’s chief legal officer, providing counsel across all operations and managing legal resources to advance strategic goals and initiatives. This role reports to and partners with the President and CEO and supports governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management for LC and its wholly-owned subsidiary, MASCO Services, Inc. Organization Established as MASCO in 1972, the Longwood Collective (LC) represents member institutions in Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA). LC offers services including transportation and commuter programs, a 300,000-square-foot facility and garage, and a leading voice on area planning, development, public policy, and sustainability. Its taxable subsidiary, MASCO Services, Inc., provides cost-saving contracts and a regional call center serving multiple organizations. Position Summary The General Counsel oversees the full scope of the organization’s legal affairs, including contracts, employment and benefits, intellectual property, compliance, real estate, litigation management, business security, and risk management. The role provides direct support to the President & CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors, ensuring governance policies and practices align with current law and best practice. The General Counsel manages outside legal resources, advises on subsidiary operations and intercompany agreements, supports enterprise risk management and data privacy compliance, and serves as a trusted partner in advancing the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in Massachusetts are required. Minimum of 10 years of legal practice advising executives and boards on governance, compliance, and organizational risk. Knowledge of nonprofit law and subsidiary oversight; strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills; high ethical standards and integrity. Ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Experience managing legal staff and/or outside counsel. Familiarity with real estate, transit, healthcare, or related sectors is a plus. Employment Type Full-time Location and Work Arrangement This is a hybrid position.
