The Wildlife Program Manager, under the direction of the Natural Resources Division Director, oversees a biological-based terrestrial ecology program necessary for the proper management of tribal wildlife, lands, and related ecosystems, the regulation of tribal wildlife and vegetation harvest, and fire management in the 1836 Treaty Ceded Territory.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
Program planning, development, and direction and supervision of program staff.
Directs wildlife, vegetation, and ecological assessments, analyses, management planning, harvest regulation, policy review, and restoration activities.
Develops recommendations for wildlife and vegetation harvest regulation, permitting and reporting processes, and species/ecosystem management planning.
Reviews other agencies' policy and regulatory actions and prepares formal responses with appropriate analyses and recommendations.
Serves as wildlife, vegetation, and terrestrial ecology and policy expert in inter-governmental management processes.
Co-develops, reviews, and enforces Tribal policies and procedures.
Oversees grant acquisition, administration, and reporting.
Oversees financial administration with budget development, review, and monitoring.
Ensures program compliance and reporting to funding agencies, Tribal, Federal, State, and local agencies and government.
Serves as a general point of contact for the Division on tribal wildlife, forestry, wetland, and fire issues at Tribal, Federal, State, and local levels.
Takes a lead role in engaging tribal priorities in management plans and strategies.
Oversees outreach on wildlife, vegetation, and related ecosystems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires team or dual lifting to 50 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, driving and bending; frequent carrying/lifting of 50 pounds, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, field of vision and occasional sitting, pushing/pulling 100 pounds, crawling, use of smell, color vision and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, frequent exposure to extreme heat/cold and wet/humidity and occasional exposure to noise, vibration and air quality. Potential hazards include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, infectious exposure, needles and syringes, and wildlife sampling equipment and occasional exposure to electric shock and computer use. Protection equipment/clothing needed to perform job include sanitary gloves, safety glasses, cold weather outerwear, and other PPE needed to perform functions of position.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Master’s Degree in Ecology, Botany, Forestry, or related field required.
Experience: Minimum two years’ vegetation and/or wildlife ecology management experience required in addition to above stated education requirements.
Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Grant administration, documentation and reporting skills required. Strong understanding of Lake States vegetation, wildlife, ecological communities, and their management required. Knowledge of vegetation data collection techniques, population dynamics, statistical analysis, and modeling required. Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, database, population modeling, and statistical analysis software. Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) required. Supervisory skills and experience required. Financial administration and management skills required. Advanced leadership and team building skills required. Grant development and management skills required. Organizational, strategic planning, project management, and governmental administration skills required. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively communicate technical findings and recommendations to policymakers, leadership, membership, and the public. Must be able to prepare clear, concise, thorough, meaningful, and grammatically correct written reports, letters, memoranda, policy and procedural drafts, and other written documents. Must be able to identify management needs and develop data collection, analysis, and management plans with appropriate regulations. Must, at times, work extended hours outdoors in inclement weather, operate and work on a boat, and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in the backcountry. Must be able to handle pressure in meetings with public and other management agencies. Must have dispute-resolution skills and ability to maintain self-discipline and objectivity. Must be able to maintain tact and diplomacy under duress. Must be able to handle, resolve and direct multiple issues and projects with composure. Must be willing and able to work in a changing dynamic environment. Must maintain strict confidentiality. Must demonstrate a readiness to support Sault Tribe culture and engage Anishinaabe knowledges and ways in Program activities. Native American preferred.
