Primary Responsibilities Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR’s matrix management structure and drive the business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. The H&R market sector includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city/town/local roads, and bridge structures, with primary professional services including bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling services. An understanding of H&R clients, funding and revenue streams, and their governmental structures is foundational. The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas: Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%) Staff development (approximately 20%) Support to Operations (approximately 10%) Responsibilities include setting the market sector vision, coordinating growth initiatives, developing staff, and implementing strategies in coordination with business group leadership, operational leadership, client managers, and practice group leaders. The MSD reports to the Transportation Business Group (TBG) Market Strategy Director and maintains regular communication with region and area leadership to implement strategic growth and operating plans. In the US, HDR maintains contracts with most state Departments of Transportation and many municipalities. HDR is expanding contractual relationships internationally. HDR’s H&R professionals engage with clients to provide expertise in bridge/highway design, traffic and transportation planning and design, construction management, and HDR services across advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities, and more. The Director is responsible for supporting area business development and client management while defining and implementing growth initiatives, coordinating best practices, maintaining HDR’s brand, and engaging employees across the Market Sector. Business Development Responsibilities The Market Sector Director leads marketplace assessment, supports local areas in winning contracts, and collaborates with cross-sectors and other market sectors in business development efforts. The MSD leads an organization that gains market share and interfaces with local area client development programs and the area business development leads to: Oversee the creation and implementation of strategic vision and direction for the market sector – aligning technical and professional services with leadership across the firm. Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector. Engage in selected projects as Principal-In-Charge. Promote HDR services to clients within the market sector in collaboration with client managers. Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team. Work with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives. Collaborate with client managers and business development leaders to drive client development and pursuit processes leveraging proven capture techniques. Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities. Participate in industry associations at a leadership level and model HDR’s corporate culture in business and community organizations. Identify key investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain HDR’s leadership position. Monitor marketing capabilities and coordinate with departments to achieve goals. Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations. Develop and maintain relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations. Lead relationships with other firms to leverage HDR’s culture, technical expertise, client relationships, and geographic presence; partnerships may involve potential acquisitions as part of HDR’s growth strategy. Lead HDR’s presence with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC (e.g., AASHTO, IBTTA, NASTO, SASHTO, WASHTO, MASTO and others). Staff Development Responsibilities The MSD leads an organization that supports client delivery and opportunities for staff growth, and assists with identifying and recruiting prospective market sector employees. Responsibilities include: Assume responsibility for Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers and coordinate work-sharing among departments. Work with business class directors to drive technical excellence and coordinate staff to support project delivery and marketing efforts. Coordinate staffing/recruiting plans for key hires and assist local leadership with local hires. Approve key/strategic hires in the market sector. Participate in Annual Performance Conversations for key market sector leaders. Support to Operations The MSD assists Regional Business Group Directors and area Business Group managers in delivering professional services for area projects in the market sector. Key responsibilities include: Drive client management, monitor and act on market sector profit and loss, review staff assignments, promote work-sharing, and ensure project delivery and QA/QC programs. Monitor market sector performance indicators (NFE, NFB, profit, unbilled revenue, AR, losses, investments); manage workload and facilitate work-sharing; optimize use of resources. Assist with contract review on key projects to ensure risk management, proper staffing, quality reviews and resolution of claims. Promote Quality Assurance/Quality Control; support local programs with technical expertise for marketing and project activities. Facilitate development and dissemination of lessons learned. Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Minimum 20 years of experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design Professional engineering license or equivalent Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations including AASHTO, IBTTA and other global organizations Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related field A minimum of 12 years of industry experience including leadership Strong written and verbal communication skills Strong skills in client management and development with a track record of growing/leading a practice Strong business skills; budgeting, staffing, and operations management Strategic marketplace analysis skills to position HDR Active participation in HDR’s employee-owned culture What We Believe HDR is our company.
