OverviewLawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) NERSC Division has an opening for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the team. We are building a next-generation platform for scientific AI on supercomputers and applying AI services to support science. The selected candidate(s) will be hired at the Computer Systems Engineer 3 or 4 (CSE3 or CSE4) level depending on skills and experience. When applying, a cover letter is highly encouraged.This role involves collaborating on multidisciplinary, cross-institution projects with lab, academic, and industry partners, developing new AI services and supporting the AI software stack on NERSC systems, and deploying cutting-edge tools and frameworks for at-scale scientific AI workflows.What You Will DoLevel 3 responsibilities:Develop AI services on NERSC’s advanced computing and data systems to support fundamental scienceSupport the AI software stack on NERSC supercomputers and deploy new tools and frameworks for scalable AI workflowsProvide expert AI engineering engagement and training events for scientists and users of NERSC computing resourcesEngage with the AI community to stay current on advancements in AI services and softwareShape future NERSC supercomputers by evaluating new architectures for AICollaborate with scientists and industry partners to enable transformative AI for scienceDetermine methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnelNetwork with key contacts outside your own area of expertiseWork on and resolve complex issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factorsExercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining resultsLevel 4 additional responsibilities:Mentor and lead early career staff in AI services, techniques and projectsStay abreast of new AI service trends through collaborations, workshops and conferences; translate directions into actionable opportunitiesDevelop strategy addressing performance and productivity for the NERSC AI-for-science communityWork on and resolve significant and unique issues requiring evaluation of intangiblesExercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining resultsWhat is RequiredLevel 3:Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences, Computer Science or related field or equivalent; Master’s and/or PhD preferredTypically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years with a Master’s; or equivalentWide-ranging experience in AI and/or data science as applied to scientific dataAbility to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues creatively and effectivelyAbility to network and collaborate with contacts outside one’s own area of expertiseExcellent oral and written communication skillsProven ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team balancing research, code development, software support, and scientific collaborationLevel 4 additional requirements:Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years with a Master’s; or equivalentBroad expertise and/or unique knowledge in AI technologiesAbility to work on and resolve significant and unique issues requiring evaluation of intangiblesAbility to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining resultsDesired QualificationsFamiliarity with deep learning architectures and technologies (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX)Track record of AI software development, AI service deployments, or publications in AI/science venuesExperience with GPUs and performance optimization of ML at scaleFamiliarity with containerization and HPC workflowsNotesThis is a full-time, career appointment, exempt from overtime pay.This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.Salary range: Level 3 full range is $136,440 to $230,244 per year; targeted range typically $153,492 to $187,596Salary range: Level 4 full range is $155,388 to $262,224 per year; targeted range typically $174,804 to $213,660This position is subject to a background check.
