Overview Managing Attorney - Workers Compensation Defense position based in San Francisco, CA (must reside within 1 hour of the city). Full-Time | Direct Hire. Compensation: $200,000 - $300,000 OTE. Billable Requirement: 225+ Hours Monthly. Work Arrangement: Hybrid/Remote Flexibility. HireNow Staffing is partnering with a California-based workers compensation defense firm to place a strategic, client-facing Managing Attorney to lead the San Francisco office. This is a hands-on leadership role balancing a manageable caseload with oversight of a legal team, while driving client satisfaction, attorney performance, and office growth. Ideal candidates are experienced litigators who enjoy mentoring teams, shaping firm culture, and deepening client relationships. This role offers long-term impact and autonomy with the backing of an established brand. Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management : Lead a team of staff attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants; provide ongoing coaching, support, and case strategy oversight. Promote accountability and excellence across the team, ensuring deadlines, billing targets, and client expectations are met. Recruit, conduct performance reviews, and develop staffing plans. Manage your own docket of workers’ compensation defense files from inception through resolution. Conduct depositions, negotiate settlements, draft legal opinions, and appear before the WCAB as necessary. Ensure high-quality, ethical representation for a variety of clients including insurers, TPAs, and employers. Client Engagement & Growth Build strong, trusting relationships with existing clients and identify opportunities to expand services. Represent the firm at industry events, panels, or conferences to raise visibility and attract new business. Collaborate with firm leadership on marketing efforts and strategic client outreach. Monitor risks, resolve escalations, and ensure alignment with firm-wide policies and performance standards. Identify workflow inefficiencies and introduce best practices to improve case cycle time and team productivity. Utilize case management software (MerusCase preferred) to ensure proper documentation and billing practices. Ideal Candidate Profile To succeed, you should be proactive, people-focused, and eager to build a high-performing office culture, in addition to your legal expertise. Required Experience & Qualifications 6+ years of workers’ compensation defense litigation experience in California Currently licensed to practice in California and in good standing Proven leadership background —experience supervising attorneys and legal support staff Demonstrated ability to manage complex caseloads while mentoring others Strong command of California WCAB procedures and statutes Excellent written, verbal, and negotiation skills Business development experience with a track record of maintaining or expanding client relationships Familiarity with MerusCase or similar legal case management platforms Must live within a one-hour commute of San Francisco What Makes This Opportunity Unique?
