Job Description And Duties

The Tort and Condemnation Section provides legal representation to California State agencies, government officials, law enforcement officers, and employees. Our team is committed to providing the highest quality legal representation to our clients who trust and expect the Attorney General’s Office to provide top tier representation on a broad range of issues. Our highly skilled deputies pride themselves on providing aggressive, proactive, and progressive litigation strategies and are committed to cultivating long-term client relationships. The Tort and Condemnation Section is looking for a Supervising Deputy Attorney General with an emphasis in complex trial and mass tort litigation to join our team and oversee, monitor, coordinate, and be a resource for all deputies handling complex trial and mass tort litigation statewide, in addition to supervising a statewide team of attorneys who handle trial and mass tort cases.

The Supervising Deputy Attorney General will work under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the Attorney General. In addition to the Supervising Deputy Attorney General directing and monitoring the work of a team of Deputy Attorneys General, additional duties include: direct supervision of paralegals; directing the work of support staff, evaluation the performance of Deputy Attorneys General and paralegals; providing training to attorneys and paralegals; handling general administrative matters; interviewing candidates for open positions; and performing difficult and complex legal work. The Supervising Deputy Attorney General will also act as the lead attorney in difficult and complex cases, including class actions, mass tort matters, and related and/or consolidated tort and/or eminent domain matters; appearing at hearings on difficult and sensitive cases; appellate advocacy; advising various legal jurisdictions, public officials and representatives of public agencies on legal issues; conducting or supervising special investigations; and drafting and analyzing legislative measures and regulations.

All applicants must reside in California and be members in good standing of the California State Bar. Supervising Deputy Attorneys General may telework or work in office at their option but are required to attend regularly scheduled in-person meetings at their local office. Travel and in-person attendance may be required for trials, court appearances, team meetings, and operationally as needed.
