Overview The Principal Product Scientist at Headspace drives the intersection of science, data, and product strategy to deliver personalized, data-driven experiences. This role partners with product managers, designers, analytics, scientists and engineers to shape product direction through advanced experimentation, personalization frameworks, and applied data science. It supports a culture of open inquiry, encouraging teams to learn through experimentation aligned with user wellbeing and Headspace’s mission. The role owns end-to-end scientific rigor from hypothesis to impact, elevating statistical rigor and experimentation standards to improve business outcomes and product experiences. What you will do Design and drive large-scale experimentation strategies (A/B, multivariate, sequential testing) to evaluate product features and customer experiences. Develop and evangelize best practices for causal inference, test design, and statistical rigor. Build, evaluate, and scale models for personalization and recommendation systems across global markets or demographics. Ethical/Responsible AI: partner with ethics and data privacy teams to ensure personalization is inclusive and free of bias. Translate scientific insights into practical frameworks that improve customer engagement, retention, and monetization, influencing strategic roadmap initiatives and driving member outcomes. Product Science Strategy Partner with product leadership to define hypotheses, prioritize experiments, and align scientific outcomes with business goals. Bridge product management and data science by framing the right questions, interpreting results, and guiding strategic product bets with balance of speed and rigor. Guide the team through bold experimentation, enabling fast learning and scaling what works.
Cross-Functional Influence Mentor product managers, analysts, and engineers on scientific thinking and experimentation. Communicate insights and recommendations clearly to executives and non-technical stakeholders.
What you will bring Required Skills: 7+ years of progressive experience in product science, experimentation, applied data science, or product analytics. Deep expertise in statistical methods, experimentation design, and causal inference. Demonstrated leadership and proven track record of building innovative personalization/recommendation systems or applied ML in consumer or enterprise products. Strong product intuition with the ability to translate data into impactful product decisions. Hands-on experience with SQL, Python/R, and experimentation platforms. Background in product management or close partnership with PMs. Advanced degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, or related quantitative field. Strong communication and collaboration; ability to translate complex insights into clear, actionable recommendations for executives and non-technical audiences. Preferred Skills: Experience in digital health is preferred, especially where science, behavior change, and technology intersect. Impact of the Role This is a senior, high-leverage role responsible for setting the scientific bar for experimentation and personalization. The Principal Product Scientist ensures that product strategy is grounded in rigorous science, driving measurable improvements in customer experience and business outcomes. Location We are currently hiring this role remotely in the US and hybrid for San Francisco (SF) and Los Angeles (LA). Candidates must permanently reside in the US full-time. For candidates with primary residence in the greater SF and LA areas, this role will follow a hybrid model with 3 days per week onsite and remote work for the rest of the week. Your recruiter will share more details about our hybrid model. The anticipated new hire base salary range for this full-time position is $162,000 - $258,750 plus equity plus benefits. Salary ranges are based on job level and location and reflect the lowest to highest geographic markets in the United States; actual compensation is determined by location and other factors such as experience, skills, and education.
