As a Principal Engineer on the Data Platform team, you'll be driving an acceleration of product development, machine learning, data science, and more by providing world-class data infrastructure and self-service tools. You will push the boundaries of data freshness and query performance while supporting thousands of tables at petabyte scale. Your responsibilities will include: Envisioning, architecting, building, and owning a highly scalable data platform to power Nextdoor's development Participating in all phases of the software development lifecycle: analysis, design, planning, development, testing/CI/CD, release, and post-production support Building partnerships with key stakeholders, evangelizing the platform, and developing a roadmap for future development Participating in in-person Nextdoor events such as trainings, off-sites, volunteer days, and team-building exercises Building in-person relationships with team members and contributing to Nextdoor's culture What You'll Bring To The Team 7-10 years of experience working on data infrastructure at petabyte scale Deep understanding of data infrastructure, governance, compliance, and enterprise data usage Knowledge of SQL, Spark/pySpark, and other data processing tools Fundamentals of computer science: data structures, algorithms, performance optimization Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub) and workflows, and writing production-ready code Knowledge of data science and machine learning tools and frameworks Familiarity with experimentation methodologies such as A/B testing, multivariate testing, and statistical analysis Experience deploying scalable software Experience with cloud technologies, especially AWS Strong communication skills, both oral and written Ability to conduct meetings, make professional presentations, and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences Eagerness to explore and apply AI and emerging technologies to reimagine work processes Rewards Our compensation, benefits, perks, and recognition programs create a comprehensive rewards package. The starting salary for this role is expected to range from $230,000 to $290,000 annually, potentially higher based on proficiency and experience. Compensation varies by location. We also offer a meaningful equity grant with quarterly vesting, with the first vesting within the first 3 months of employment. Total compensation depends on skills, experience, and qualifications. We cover 100% of health, dental, and vision premiums, and include a OneMedical membership for concierge care.
