We are looking for a Security Engineering Group Tech Lead with a broad range of experience spanning security automation, incident response, threat modeling, and security feature development. You will be working with a world-class team of engineers building security into the DNA of Asana and our product. The Security Engineering group is responsible for the security of Asana to make sure we maintain customer trust and are able to grow sustainably. You will collaborate with teams across the company including Legal, IT, Research & Development, and Security that powers our business and our product.
This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. Along with most Asanas, you’ll work from this office in person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you're interviewing for this role, your Talent Acquisition Partner will share more about the in-office requirements.
As the Technical Lead for our Security Engineering Group, you'll serve as both a hands-on technical expert and a technical leader, guiding teams of engineers in building security tools and scaling our systems. While this role focuses on technical leadership rather than people management, you'll be instrumental in technical decision-making, project execution, and mentoring team members.
What you'll achieve: Lead technical design and implementation of complex security projects, writing high-quality code while guiding the team's technical direction.
Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for Corporate Security, Infrastructure Security, and Product Security, ensuring alignment with broader security and engineering goals.
Mentor team members through technical guidance, code reviews, and architectural discussions.
Coordinate with customers, product teams and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical implementations.
Participate in and lead the on-call rotation, setting examples for security incident management.
Balance and prioritize technical debt, feature work, and security improvements.
Champion engineering excellence and best practices and help establish technical standards.
Provide technical leadership in cross-company initiatives involving Security.
About you: 10+ years of experience in software development & security with experience in identifying security issues and then developing software solutions as mitigations.
Deep hands-on technical expertise in several key areas, such as:
Application or Product Security
Cloud or Infrastructure Security
Network or IT Security
Detection and Response
Cryptography
Exploit Development and Security Assessments
Track record of successfully leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
Strong hands-on coding abilities and system design skills; 5+ years building product security features.
Experience building security services and features in cloud environments (AWS)
Extensive experience with cloud services and modern infrastructure tools
Experience in making technical trade-offs and articulating them to stakeholders
Strong communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
History of fostering technical excellence while maintaining team velocity
Demonstrates curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.

To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.
For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $272,000 - $368,000. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.
In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits.
