Senior Bio Machine Learning Scientist - 136085

New Yesterday

The Ideker Laboratory, part of the Division of Human Genetics and Precision Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, is seeking a Senior BioMachine Learning (BioML) Scientist to lead machine learning R&D for the ADAPT project, a new initiative funded by ARPA-H focused on precision cancer therapy. Our team, comprising 30-40 staff, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students, is known for its collaborative environment. We conduct bioinformatics research combined with wet-lab investigations, focusing on network biology, hierarchical modeling, and machine learning in biomedicine. We also support open-source software projects with large user bases. Our main goal is to develop AI models of cancer for translating patient data into precision diagnosis and treatment, advancing visible predictive machine learning approaches to understand genetic information flow and molecular mechanisms. The Senior BioML Scientist will oversee bioML research projects aligned with the ADAPT program's goals. Responsibilities include designing machine learning approaches for drug recommendation, leading interdisciplinary collaborations, optimizing algorithms for multimodal datasets, developing real-time tumor monitoring tools, maintaining research platforms, guiding junior researchers, and contributing to software development and scientific dissemination. The role also involves identifying funding opportunities and potentially leading other projects within the lab. This position requires expertise in bioinformatics, machine learning, systems biology, and cancer biology, with a focus on developing computational tools and strategies for personalized cancer therapies. The work involves a hybrid of computational, data science, and cyberinfrastructure fields, applying research principles to develop and support high-performance computing and data science tools. Minimum qualifications include seven years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree plus three years of experience, with demonstrated expertise in HPC, data science, and CI environments, and strong collaborative and communication skills. The role involves working on multiple projects and contributing to grant proposals. Employment is subject to a criminal background check. The pay range is $85,400 - $176,800 annually, prorated if less than full-time, with factors including experience and qualifications influencing the final offer.
