Senior Staff Engineer – Backend (Python) role at Venmo. Venmo is part of PayPal. We are looking for intellectually curious engineers who want to be inspired and inspire others to change the world by building scalable backend systems and services.
What You Will Do
- Establish a track record of successful technical leadership with a solid understanding of software architecture and the ability to manage a team of cross-functional engineers.
- Advocate for technical standards, engineering best practices, and quality across Venmo and PayPal teams.
- Contribute as a senior engineer with 12+ years of experience in software engineering, architecture, and/or product development.
- Experience in managing geographically distributed teams is preferred.
- Provide input and ownership on decisions impacting multiple teams, processes, and resource usage.
- Make informed decisions between competing priorities and communicate tradeoffs to stakeholders.
- Research and explore internal and industry-wide technologies to propose solutions to ambitious business problems.
- Demonstrate incident management capability with direction, rapid mitigation, and root-cause analysis for follow-up actions.
- Expertise in technical product management, including agile delivery, planning, estimating, staffing, and execution.
Job Requirements – Generalist
- 12+ years of experience building large-scale applications with a high-level programming language.
- Advanced skills with data stores, caching, and messaging/queuing systems.
- Ability to lead projects and mentor engineering staff, and manage relationships with Product, Engineering Operations, and non-technical teams.
- Experience architecting fault-tolerant distributed services and backend systems, scaling to millions of users with high concurrency.
- DevOps mindset and experience building services on public clouds.
- Strong understanding of testing best practices and familiarity with at least one testing framework.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical issues to non-technical audiences.
- Collaborative mindset with passion for mentoring and continuous learning.
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
