Position Summary Reporting to the Senior Director of Voting Rights or a Director of Voting Rights Litigation, the Senior Legal Counsel is an integral member of the voting rights team. The team litigates cases in federal and state courts and develops, implements, advocates for, and defends policies that promote the right to vote across the country. The Senior Legal Counsel divides their time between litigation and policy efforts as needed. The responsibilities include identifying litigation opportunities, developing litigation strategies challenging anti-voter laws, preparing pleadings, managing discovery, overseeing trial and appellate proceedings, supervising team members, and providing legal expertise to stakeholders and policymakers. This work may involve analyzing legislation, drafting policy proposals, creating advocacy materials, testifying before legislatures, and collaborating with coalitions to support voting rights. This position is eligible for telework and flexible work arrangements. Applicants nationwide are encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities Identify and develop strategic litigation opportunities promoting voting rights in coordination with stakeholders. Manage caseload from pleadings through discovery, trial, and appeal. Prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs in federal and state courts; strategize and manage discovery. Take and defend depositions, lead conferences with opposing counsel, and participate in court hearings. Manage record-building activities for cases. Draft legislation and policy proposals; review proposed legislation and regulations; create legal advocacy materials. Build and maintain relationships with local and national partners. Manage junior team members, including counsel and support staff. Perform other related duties as assigned. Travel may be required. Qualifications Minimum of five years of legal experience. Active DC bar membership or eligibility to waive into the DC bar. Experience with all stages of litigation. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. Experience managing staff. Interest in voting rights and election law is preferred but not required. Commitment to the nonpartisan mission of CLC.
