Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver - The World's Most Experienced Driver - to improve access to mobility while saving lives currently lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can be applied to various vehicle platforms and use cases. It has completed over one million rider-only trips, driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.
The Waymo Applied Research team aims to develop machine learning solutions to address open problems in autonomous driving, with the goal of operating Waymo vehicles safely in multiple cities and conditions. We also collaborate with other research teams within Alphabet.
This is a hybrid role reporting to a Director of Research.
Responsibilities include:
Planning and implementing a machine learning-driven autonomous vehicle planner research agenda
Applying and extending robotics and machine learning research to advance high-level planning, utilizing techniques like foundation modeling, reinforcement learning, and search algorithms
Managing and leading a team of research scientists, supporting their career growth
Collaborating across teams to deploy technology into production
Publishing research in top-tier academic venues
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
10+ years in deep learning-based systems for robotics, including dataset, evaluation, and model design
5+ years of team management experience
Proficiency in Python
Hands-on experience with modern deep learning architectures and training
Preferred qualifications:
Masters or PhD in Machine Learning or related fields
Publications in top-tier conferences or leading open source contributions
SWE skills for large-scale data and evaluation pipelines
Proficiency in C++
Experience in AV planning and research

The base salary range for this full-time role in the US is $281,000 — $356,000 USD. Actual pay depends on location, experience, education, and skills. Additional benefits include a discretionary annual bonus, equity incentives, and comprehensive company benefits.
