What you need to know about the job The Vice President, Total Rewards will lead and direct the Total Rewards function to ensure the American Red Cross’s overall compensation, benefits and recognition programs are competitive with market practice, enabling the organization to attract, retain and motivate top talent aligned with the organization’s objectives, culture, and mission. The role covers research, design, implementation, communication and administration of all Red Cross benefits, compensation, recognition and retention programs to serve over 17,000 employees enterprise-wide. The incumbent will collaborate across HR areas to create an engaging workplace and will report to the Chief Human Resources Officer as a member of the HR Leadership Team. The work location is virtual; 100% remote, with occasional travel to National HQ in Washington, DC and other Red Cross offices as needed. Responsibilities Develop, design, and implement new benefit, compensation, recognition, and retention programs, policies, and procedures that are market competitive, cost-effective, consistently administered, and legally compliant across all business units. Review and assess current programs; recommend and implement changes to support market practices and trends. Partner with HR teams to communicate Total Rewards matters and educate stakeholders and employees on programs. Build, lead, develop, and mentor a high-performing Total Rewards team (approximately 20 professionals) with two direct reports. Manage direct budget of $3M and indirect vendor budget of ~$10M; oversee a benefits portfolio of $250M; monitor budgets with Finance. Interface with external vendors to ensure cost-effectiveness, compliance, and good employee experience; monitor performance and resolve issues. Ensure governance through record-keeping, data reporting, and compliance for executive management, boards, auditors, and agencies. Interface with Board committee and independent compensation consultant on benefits and compensation matters. Improve communication and education on Total Rewards matters; drive process improvements and automation. Stay current on market practices and legal issues; oversee market research/analysis to support pay plan changes. Update and analyze data annually to maintain competitive posture and internal equity; monitor legislative changes. As a senior HR leader, participate in or lead HR projects and act as liaison with c-suite executives and key leaders. Scope: people manager that interprets and administers policies and procedures affecting sections and subordinate units. Qualifications Qualified candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. The American Red Cross does not sponsor employment visas. What you need to succeed (required / minimum qualifications) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 15 years of progressively responsible experience leading and managing Compensation and Benefits in a large, complex organization. Demonstrated ability to structure compensation and benefits packages and measure effectiveness. Experience creating road maps and business cases for executive decision-making; ability to influence senior leaders. Knowledge of government regulations as they apply to compensation and benefits offerings, policies, and procedures. Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to provide guidance on compensation/benefits best practices and to build consensus across all levels. Strong analytical, quantitative, project management, problem solving and consultation skills. Vendor management and results-oriented project management experience. What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications) Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Certified Professional or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP). Experience in organizations with diverse employee populations and with Labor Unions. Combination of education and experience that meets the minimum requirements; management experience cannot be substituted. Compensation and Benefits Pay information: The starting annual salary range for this position is $230K - $270K. We do not offer an annual bonus or incentive pay for this role. Salaries are aligned with geographic location and may be influenced by skills, experience, and market factors. We will review specific salary information at the time of phone screening based on location and experience.
