The Virology (HIV) Regional Medical Scientific Director is a credentialed (MD, PhD, DNP, or PharmD) therapeutic and disease area expert who engages in scientific exchange and research support with external scientific leaders and investigators. The RMSD provides balanced, factual, scientific information about non-product areas of interest and responds to scientific questions from Scientific Leaders (SLs), including questions about the Company’s products and data. The RMSD facilitates peer-level relationships with scientific leaders in the external medical/scientific community and supports data generation activities for Company-sponsored trials and Investigator Study Programs as prioritized by R&D. The RMSD reports to the Regional RMSD Team Leader – within US Medical Affairs, Global Clinical Development, Research and Development (R&D).
Primary Activities
Identify, establish and manage collaborative professional relationships with national, regional and clinical practice scientific leaders (SLs) and investigators to address scientific needs and ensure access to medical and scientific information on areas of therapeutic interest and Company data or products
Conduct peer-level scientific discussions and maintain a reliable presence to ensure SLs have an R&D/Medical Affairs contact within the Company
Engage in proactive non-product discussions regarding scientific issues (e.g., disease states, diagnosis, epidemiology, unmet medical need, and population health) to inform R&D/GMA and HH strategy or research programs
Facilitate appropriate scientific exchange of information with SLs, integrating scientific knowledge with insights to inform R&D and HH strategies
Communicate external stakeholder opinions, insights and feedback on new data and clinical trends to Medical Affairs HQ to inform internal R&D strategies
Represent R&D at scientific meetings and contribute to debriefs, insight discussions and post-congress reports
Develop and execute territory plans in alignment with global Virology strategy
Support data generation activities when requested by R&D leadership, acting as the primary liaison to investigators for investigator-initiated research programs
Identify potential investigators for participation in phase II–IV programs and provide scientific support for sponsored trials as needed
Provide in-depth scientific support to Health Systems teams within USMA
Maintain in-depth knowledge of the assigned disease and therapeutic area through education, attendance at conferences, workshops and journal review; comply with all company policies, laws, regulations and ethical standards
Education Minimum Requirement
An advanced degree (MD, PhD, DNP or PharmD) relevant to Virology and requirements of the position
Experience – Minimum Requirements
A minimum of 3 years in the biotech/pharmaceutical or healthcare environment
A minimum of 3 years of clinical and/or research experience (beyond degree) in Virology/HIV or related area with demonstrated scientific excellence
Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking and presentation skills
Ability to travel up to 50% with overnights and reside in the coverage region
Skills Required
Deep therapeutic competency in Virology with awareness of trends and new information
Ability to network with external customers, including scientific leaders, investigators, and academic institutions
Ability to consolidate and interpret complex data sets, plan and execute data analyses, and summarize results
Knowledge of national and society treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, FDA regulations, and ethical guidelines
Ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a changing environment
Preferred capabilities
Recognition for scientific excellence in Virology through clinical, academic and/or translational research
Experience in both clinical Virology and independent research/publications in Virology; late-stage clinical research experience desirable
5+ years of prior pharmaceutical industry experience in Virology
Prior work within the coverage region and established Virology stakeholder relationships
Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to address challenges within authority
Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
Hybrid/remote work arrangement; candidate should reside within the coverage region (HQ in Upper Gwynedd, PA)
