Position Title: Associate Director of Labor Relations
Reports To: Director of Labor Relations
Salary Range: $135,000 - $175,000
Location: Anaheim, CA
Your Opportunity: United Contractors (UCON) is seeking a labor relations professional to grow our organization, influence, capability, and advocacy. The job focuses on relationships, including negotiating contracts, resolving disputes, providing guidance, and adding to the leadership of a union-affiliated contractors association. We represent over 500 union-affiliated companies in the infrastructure construction industry, totaling over $40 billion of work annually and 30,000+ craft employees. We negotiate on behalf of some of the largest bargaining units in the country. Our membership includes small privately owned family firms as well as large multinational entities, all of whom we provide with the upmost care, guidance, and customer service. This role involves collaborative partnering and passionate advocacy. The successful candidate will work with the Director of Labor Relations to lead our team as the premier organization in the industry. Key roles include labor relations advocacy, contract interpretation, dispute resolution, grievance case preparation, contractor resource creation, and consultation services to member firms. Success in this position requires building a relationship network among member leaders, negotiating teams, labor leaders, and internal staff. Social and emotional intelligence, team orientation, and commitment are more important than technical capability.

Position Description: Assist in developing UCON’s labor relations profile with contractors and unions across the state, focusing on Southern California. Foster cooperative relationships with other departments, association members, and union contacts. Plan, create, distribute, and manage industry guidance, programs, and other member services. Support the execution of department activities and functions, including the implementation of policies and standards, and assist department and management staff within areas of expertise. This position offers the potential for an expanded role and increased responsibilities within a high-performing labor relations team in the near future.
Areas of Responsibility: General Labor Relations & Advocacy:
Assist in labor negotiations, arbitrations, and representing contractors in union grievances.
Provide frontline problemsolving assistance to members, including contract interpretation and analysis.
Maintain and foster positive union relations at all levels.
Serve as a staff liaison to the Labor Executive Committee (LEC) and craft committees in Southern California, including for all work associated with committee administration and execution.
Participate in meetings with the LECs and other Boards, Trusts, and leadership committees as needed across the state, overseeing the preparation and delivery of reports and presentations.
Communicate organizational initiatives and accomplishments internally and externally through bulletins, UCON magazine, social media, public relations, and similar channels.
Attend UCON events, Board of Directors meetings, and other industry events to represent the organization’s interests.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Member Services/Retention:
Provide contractor help desk and labor representative services.
Assist in administering and updating the catalog of guides, charts, and other resources to meet evolving contractor and industry needs.
Analyze and provide guidance on new employment, labor, and HR laws and regulations affecting members.
Participate in new market/membership development and organizing agreements.
Build and develop contractor leadership infrastructure. Responsible for talent recruitment and development for the craft committees.
Increase CBA Power of Attorney (POA) assignments by members and nonmember contractors to enhance influence and bargaining effectiveness.
Educate members on UCON services, products, and resources.
Conduct new member orientations and topicspecific trainings.
Ensure member satisfaction through services provided and relationship maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:
35 years of labor relations experience, including contract negotiations and grievance/dispute resolution
BA/BS or Master's Degree in a related field preferred
Understanding of labormanagement and related issues
Knowledge of the construction industry is a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT); knowledge of Salesforce is a plus
Valid California driver's license, current DMV printout, and proof of insurance
Hybrid work culture with opportunities to work from home. The role requires day travel within Southern California and occasional travel to Northern California.
