Overview Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Healthcare & Research to work in a wide-ranging, intellectually stimulating, and collaborative practice within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The AGC will work primarily in the Healthcare & Research practice group and will work closely with the Chief Compliance Officer. The role involves providing legal counsel across the research and academic medical center enterprise, including transactional and regulatory compliance support, and legal issues related to graduate medical education conducted through the School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. Responsibilities Provide legal guidance and support regarding compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to JHU’s research activities, domestically and internationally. Advise on a broad range of sponsored research issues, including animal and human subjects research, intellectual property, privacy, conflict of interest, award compliance, research integrity, investigational drugs and devices, clinical trials, and other regulatory requirements. Support research administration offices in negotiating and administering sponsored research (basic laboratory and clinical trial) and drafting communications with government agencies, universities, foundations, and biotech/pharmaceutical companies (e.g., sponsored research agreements, data use agreements, material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements). Provide legal advice on research misconduct proceedings and review inquiry/investigation reports for legal sufficiency. Interpret, draft, and revise policies and procedures; work with the Compliance office to support research compliance matters. Serve on relevant JHU committees and provide legal counsel on committee work. Other areas and projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school with superior academic credentials. Active membership in good standing in at least one state bar; satisfaction of all applicable requirements for attorneys practicing in Maryland. Five plus years of relevant experience providing advice on transactional and regulatory compliance matters within an academic setting, law firm, nonprofit, or relevant government department/agency. Education may substitute for experience where permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications Experience counseling on complex legal issues and compliance with healthcare and research laws, regulations, and policies. Expertise drafting and negotiating complex contracts (e.g., sponsored research, confidentiality, clinical trial, data use, licensing, material transfer, MOUs, affiliations, professional services). Willingness to learn new subject areas and implement new knowledge. Commitment to providing excellent customer service with prompt and practical legal advice. Strong analytic skills and sound judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple tasks, and meet competing deadlines. Clear, concise, and collegial communication with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion; appropriate self-awareness and escalation when needed. Experience in higher education or academic medical settings strongly preferred.
