CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, CARB-X (REMOTE - WORLDWIDE) The CARB-X Chief Financial Officer (CFO) leads strategic financial planning and grant administration to sustain and grow CARB-X’s mission to restore the global R&D pipeline for antibacterials, preventatives, and diagnostics. The CFO will work with the Executive Team to communicate financial status and strategy to internal and external stakeholders and may engage in negotiations as needed. This is a virtual role and may operate across US and European time zones.
Responsibilities
Financial strategy, budget development and resource management: create multi-year financial plans, provide analysis for investment decisions, monitor funds headroom, design analytical tools for investment scenarios, manage the annual Core and related budgets, and lead external audit processes and compliance activities.
Strategic collaboration: work with the Executive Director, Chief of R&D, and Chief of External Affairs to develop financial strategy; oversee funding and grant continuation processes; ensure alignment with BU central financial plans and CARB-X budget.
Financial monitoring and governance: determine allocation strategy to optimize pooled funding; oversee spending, cash flow, and modifications to awards; prepare sponsor reports and resolve subrecipient issues; maintain financial and compliance tooling with BU and external partners.
Research administration: lead financial and research administration aspects of funding cycles, ensure compliance with BU, sponsor, and federal regulations; oversee subrecipient actions and due diligence; communicate complex issues to management and stakeholders.
Staff development and supervision: provide leadership to the Finance & Research Administration team; define roles, set goals, recruit and manage performance, and promote CARB-X values.
Required skills: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s preferred) with 8+ years of senior-level financial management in non-profit settings; strong financial modeling, business acumen, and experience with research administration; excellent written and oral communication; leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications
Education and experience: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred; 8+ years in senior financial management in non-profit settings.
Strategic thinker with strong financial modeling and analysis background; ability to translate data into strategic guidance.
Experience integrating entrepreneurial thinking in a large institutional setting; familiarity with research administration; ability to lead and collaborate with leadership teams.
