This attorney will work closely with the Senior Division Counsel, as well as across internal business teams, to advise on a wide range of legal matters and transactions related to property development and management, contracts, risk mitigation, and dispute management. The Firm: Our client is a leading owner, operator, and developer of high-end retail and mixed-use properties. Their diverse 25 million square foot portfolio includes a range of retail assets, from large grocery-anchored shopping centers and lifestyle centers to collections of street retail and urban mixed-use properties. This position offers a hybrid schedule and is based in the DC metro area, with relocation support available. The Duties: Oversee legal matters that impact properties, including property management, risk management and disputes, and contracts with vendors, consultants, and other third parties. Review and negotiate contracts with vendors, consultants, and other third parties supporting Property Operations, Marketing, Accounting, Tenant Coordination, Construction and Development, and Specialty/Temporary Leasing. Review and negotiate access agreements, easement agreements, and related documents for company properties. Prepare or respond to default claims asserted by or against tenants; draft notices and letter amendments to leases; research issues related to property operations, construction, and use restrictions; and interpret lease language as requested. Manage and oversee resolution of claims asserted by or against the trust (excluding collection and eviction matters), including insured and uninsured litigation, mechanics liens, and third-party claims. Partner with and advise Asset Management, Property Operations, Lease Administration, and Leasing on a variety of landlord-tenant disputes. Partner with and advise Property Operations and Marketing on property management issues, coordinating with property and asset managers as needed. Oversee risk management and insurance programs related to property operations; coordinate with third-party adjusters and insurers on general liability and property management claims and litigation, including evaluation and resolution. Engage and manage outside counsel as necessary. Interface with the company’s third-party environmental consultant. Manage the design, development, and construction contract preparation process for company properties. Prepare, update, and implement corporate legal operations policies and procedures. Your Qualifications: J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar admission in any U.S. jurisdiction. 7+ years’ legal experience in commercial/retail real estate law. Demonstrated effectiveness as a strategic advisor and collaborative business partner. Litigation experience or litigation oversight is a plus. Ability to work cooperatively, efficiently, and collaboratively with others in a team environment. Commitment to excellence and outstanding performance. Demonstrated ability to take ownership of areas within scope of responsibility, prioritize and organize work effectively to meet deadlines, and remain dedicated to consistent growth and improvement. Proven track record of creating effective legal strategies. Must be able to take initiative and navigate independently to a viable solution. Proven decision-making capabilities and sound judgment, with the ability to analyze situations and information. Excellent negotiating skills, with the proven ability to influence and persuade others. Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. High degree of professional ethics and integrity. Experience managing a process or group. Proficient in computer systems, with intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
