Overview We are seeking a hands-on, technically proficient, and people-centered Director of Digital Engineering to lead application development for our multi-billion-dollar eCommerce Web and Mobile platform. In this high-impact leadership position, you will report directly to the VP of Engineering and work closely with Product Management, Design, and cross-functional technology and business stakeholders to drive innovation, roadmap execution, and operational excellence. Our flexible/hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations include Chicago, IL, and Quincy, MA. Duties And Responsibilities Strategy Planning: Collaborate with executive leadership to define and drive the technology strategy and execution planning aligned with business goals.
Roadmap Execution: Lead the end-to-end delivery of roadmap initiatives, overseeing analysis, design, development, deployment, and operational support for assigned functional domains and full-stack (front-end, back-end, mobile) applications.
Technology Leadership: Oversee multiple engineering teams responsible for the software quality, team efficiency, and fast time-to-market by continuously improving engineering excellence measured by DORA metrics.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product Management, Architecture, Data, Infrastructure, Security, and other business functions to ensures clear requirements, align on priorities, and deliver cohesive end-to-end solutions.
Domain Expertise: Develop and maintain deep expertise in domain-specific business processes and the supporting technologies.
People Management: Build and retain high-performing teams through strong leadership, mentorship, and a culture of growth, accountability, and continuous learning.
Operational Excellence: Instill engineering best practices, robust CI/CD pipelines, high availability, resiliency, fast incident recovery and resolution.
Innovation: Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement to keep our technology stack modern, efficient, and enhance customer experiences.
External Partnerships: Manage relationships with third-party vendors to ensure quality service delivery, cost-effectiveness, and improved user experience. Own accountability for third-party performance.
Financial stewardship: Manages capital and expense budget that aligns with staffing, software, and hardware within the assigned domain.
Qualifications 12+ years of experience in software engineering, including hands-on coding experiences and at least 5+ years in progressively senior engineering leadership roles.
Demonstrated track record of leading high-performing engineering teams at scale.
Deep expertise in modern software engineering, micro-services architecture, cloud platforms, and agile methodologies.
Strong strategic mindset with the ability to align technology investments with long-term business goals.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of influencing cross-functional teams.
Experience working in a mission-critical, fast-paced, and customer-obsessed environment.
Preferred Qualifications Bachelor\'s or master\'s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
Experiences with large-scale eCommerce or other mission critical digital platforms.
Hands-on experiences with more than one of following technologies: Mobile Native App Development (Swift/SwiftUI or Kotlin), Web Development (React, VueJS, Nuxt, Typescript, Javascript), Web Content Management Systems (Adobe, Bloomreach, Contentful, etc.), Content Distribution Network (Cloudflare, Akamai, etc.), Public Cloud Platforms (Kubernetes, Azure/AWS/GCP), CI/CD, Github, Application Performance Management (Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, New Relic, etc.).
