About this Role The Director of Indigenous and Community-Based Ocean Governance will lead Conservation International’s efforts in Hawaiʻi within the Community-Based Conservation program. This role focuses on fostering reciprocal relationships between humans and the environment, promoting sustainable coastal stewardship and fisheries management of Hawaiʻi’s resources, and elevating Indigenous voices and practices in marine resource stewardship. The Director will be responsible for creating and implementing a vision and strategy that aligns with both regional and global initiatives while contributing to the overall mission of the Center for Oceans. The role involves significant external engagement and partnership development to advance ocean conservation and governance grounded in Indigenous rights. Responsibilities Lead the design, implementation, and adaptive management of the Community-Based Conservation program in Hawaiʻi. Initiate and maintain community-based monitoring programs. Facilitate the development of place-based action plans. Support the Community-Based Monitoring Manager in co-facilitating the Community-Based Monitoring Hui. Research and co-develop Indigenous Data Governance and Sovereignty principles. Administrate community subgrants supporting place-based conservation actions. Promote networking for Community-based Mālama ʻĀina organizations. Provide supervision and mentorship to staff and interns. Build and maintain relationships and coalitions across sectors to drive policy reforms. Represent CI in high-level forums to advocate for Indigenous rights in conservation. Lead efforts to secure funding for community-driven ocean conservation initiatives. Requirements BS, BA, or equivalent degree with 7+ years of related experience. 2+ years of experience in personnel management. Extensive knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s socio-cultural environment.
