Under the guidance and supervision of the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Director of Individual Giving (DIG) serves as a critical partner for direct fundraising, implementation of campaigns, and future campaign planning. The DIG will focus their work on cultivating and stewarding individual donors (both Annual Fund and Major Gifts) and related campaigns and appeals – growing the donor base, strengthening relationships, and renewing and upgrading individual donor support. The DIG will also play a key role in the production and success of fundraising and virtual events, particularly around strategizing, creating mailing lists, personal outreach, and follow-up.
This position also oversees the donor database and donor acknowledgements with assistance from the Executive Assistant, helps establish and implement data-entry policies and procedures to ensure data consistency and quality, and leads efforts to develop compelling engagement strategies.
The Director of Individual Giving is a member of the Development, Communications, and Volunteer team and works in collaboration with multiple teams including Development, Leadership, Finance, Impact & Evaluation, and Programs.
Essential Functions:
Annual Fund and Major Donor Campaigns
- Working closely with the CDO, the DIG oversees the strategy development, copy, design, and implementation of all direct mail solicitations (appeals, newsletters, special mailings, case statements, and postcards) to increase the number of donors, prospects, and overall giving.
- Strategizes and manages a detailed schedule of direct mail activities and ensures the appropriate review of copy and mailing list selection.
- Works with Development team, Program staff, vendors, and consultants for strategic input, copywriting, design, production, personalization, and mailing.
- Oversees VPI’s monthly giving program and tribute gifts, assessing and strategizing new opportunities to promote and cultivate program participation.
- Works with the CDO to determine solicitation strategies for increased giving opportunities within the Annual Fund, develops strategic donor recognition opportunities, and facilitates the transfer of these donors between Annual Fund and Major Gifts.
Annual Fund and Major Gifts Fundraising
- Stewards a portfolio of approximately 125-150 Annual Fund and Major Gift donors, each with a moves management plan to more deeply engage each person.
- Prepares donor summaries, prospect research documents, and gift agreements.
- Secures leadership gifts, special project support, and planned gifts in accordance with the organizational strategic plan and annual goals.
Systems and Database
- With the help of the Executive Assistant, the DIG oversees and manages all aspects of the CharityProud database including data integrity, updates, improvements, and corrections.
- Serves as primary liaison with CharityProud’s Senior Client Account Manager and any other vendors which support donor base operations.
- Builds complex reports and lists needed for mailings, events, and moves management.
- Seeks out and participates in trainings and webinars to stay abreast of trends and best practices in donor base management.
- Researches and tests new fundraising methodology.
- Utilizes CharityProud to support fundraising and the cultivation, stewardship, and acknowledgement of donors.
- Works with the CDO to create the Annual Fund and Major Gifts budgets and manage expenses.
Gift Entry and Acknowledgements
- Data entry of gifts into donor base with accurate information and appropriate program allocation.
- Ensures timely acknowledgement of all individual gifts, producing and sending acknowledgement letters with appropriate tax language.
- Writes copy for all acknowledgement emails and letters, changing copy to reflect specific appeals or time of year.
- Conducts personal outreach via email, notecard, or phone to thank donors.
- Responsible for downloading gift information from various giving platforms and coding for the Finance department.
- Disseminates annual tax information to members of the monthly giving program.
- Acknowledgement of gifts made in honor or in memoriam to honorees and memorial contacts.
Reconciliation and Reporting
- Works closely with the Finance Department on monthly and year-end revenue reconciliation and to provide auditing data.
- Works closely with the Finance Department on daily coding of cash gifts.
- Creates revenue reports for departmental use/analyses on a regular basis and at the request of other Development staff.
Event Support
- Provides logistical support for events for purposeful donor recognition, cultivation and stewardship, including signature “Red Door” events, virtual roundtable discussions, house parties, open houses, program tours, and other outreach events, to strengthen donor relations.
- Generates invitation lists and sends personalized invitations to events when appropriate.
- Works with CDO to help build events calendar
- When applicable, solicits sponsorships, donated auction items, and more for fundraising events
- Helps manage data entry, acknowledgements, tracking of sponsorships and RSVPS, and guest lists for all events.
Other Support
- Coordinates other (non-appeal) departmental mailings, including annual reports and charitable investment updates.
- Actively participates in weekly team meetings and 1:1 meetings with CDO.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Participate in evening and weekend fundraising activities when required.
- Represent Victory Programs to community agencies and individuals.
- Performs any other requests that, from time to time, are made by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Minimum of five years successfully managing non-profit direct mail or other nonprofit marketing efforts.
- Proven track record of building a portfolio, engaging and motivating donors, and making asks.
- Outstanding analytical, creative, and strategic thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Excellent user of office technology and information systems and donor databases.
- Self-directed with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- A strong commitment to the mission of Victory Programs.
- Fluency in Google Workspace preferred.
Position Type: Mon-Fri, hybrid, flexible/some evenings required (40 hours), exempt.
Victory Programs is committed to paying competitive wages. To increase equity, because we know that salary negotiations tend to have an unfair bias, we do not participate in a salary negotiation process for any exempt candidate. We will make our best offer, and it will be the same regardless of the candidate. The annual starting salary for the Director of Individual Giving is $95,000. This position meets the exemption requirements as defined by state and federal law. Exempt employees are paid on a salaried basis, and their salary is intended to constitute their entire regular compensation, regardless of the number of hours they work; therefore, exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.
