Overview Executive Underwriter, Middle Market Life Sciences Liberty Mutual Insurance is building a dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team to launch Liberty Mutual's Life Sciences Industry Practice within the Middle Market. The vertical focuses on multi-line Property and Liability insurance solutions for mid-sized Life Sciences companies (R&D stage through $2B insured product/service revenue) including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health, cellular and tissue-based products, and related ecosystems. This role collaborates with Liberty Mutual’s Life Sciences Claims and Risk Control teams to provide specialized underwriting expertise and service to Life Sciences insureds, agents, and brokers. The position emphasizes new business production, market expansion, and strategic development within a hybrid work arrangement (2 days in office, 3 days remote) with up to 25% travel based on opportunity.” Responsibilities - Executive Underwriter New business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, and underwrite submissions; assess risks; determine premiums and policy terms; utilize underwriting tools; obtain approvals as needed; present proposals to agents/brokers; negotiate deals. Post-sale service: service accounts after winning the business in coordination with Liberty Account Analysts and Client Service Managers; meet with insureds to uphold Liberty’s value proposition. Portfolio and relationship management: manage brokers/agents and client relationships; maintain a high level of responsiveness; visit sites; conduct renewal meetings; build a long-term pipeline with agents and brokers. Pipeline development: actively identify and solicit opportunities for personal success. Technical differentiation: articulate coverage differences in this specialized Life Sciences space with detail. Regulatory and industry knowledge: maintain strong knowledge of key legal cases, legislation, and regulations affecting Life Sciences underwriting. Knowledge sharing: provide external thought leadership and share technical expertise. Mentoring and training: mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and partners. Strategic input: contribute to business and marketing planning with data-driven insights from portfolio analysis. Cross‑functional collaboration: participate in projects to grow Liberty’s Life Sciences Industry Practice, and collaborate across Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, and leadership in North America. Qualifications Degree in Business, Risk Management, or Scientific Field or equivalent Typically 7–10+ years of progressive underwriting experience and/or related business experience Minimum 5 years of Life Sciences underwriting experience CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred Analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks; strong knowledge of Life Sciences products, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, and market dynamics Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable Life Sciences business Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly in writing and/or verbally to internal stakeholders Strong communication and interpersonal skills for internal and external collaboration Ability to understand complex technical underwriting issues and implement appropriate workflows About Us Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location.
