Overview Zurich is currently hiring an experienced Life Sciences Underwriter to join the Middle Market team in Boston. This position will be a hybrid role with two days per week in the office. Middle Markets is a key business segment within Zurich North America focused on attracting top customer advocates with a sales mindset, strong technical underwriting skills, and solution-focused problem solving abilities. You will handle complex new and renewal Middle Markets business and serve as a Subject Matter Expert for Middle Markets Life Science. This is an exciting time to join Middle Markets at Zurich.
This role will be filled at the Senior or AVP level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
Responsibilities Serve as a Life Science industry practice advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding risk and offering the best end-to-end solution for insurance needs.
Use a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment and pricing
Use risk insights, data and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale
Assist in the refinement of underwriting guidelines for life science exposures
Identify gaps in customer programs and align Zurich’s products and value proposition to offer a solution that provides contract certainty
Demonstrate strong analytical skills and act as an innovative advisor
Underwrite, analyze and generate new and renewal business for Life Science risks
Demonstrate strong coverage analysis skills and communicate life science defenses and exposure analysis for product liability
Market facing and contribute to production within the growing Middle Markets division
Collaborate with multiple groups within Zurich to build knowledge of life science exposures, controls, market requirements, and opportunities
Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations and rating manual rules
Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships
Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments
Basic Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
Knowledge of Microsoft Office
Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
Experience working in a team environment
AVP Level Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 12 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
Experience with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications Strong verbal and written communication skills
Compensation and Benefits At Zurich, compensation for roles is influenced by a variety of factors, including but not limited to location, role, skill set, and experience. Zurich commits to providing a fair and reasonable compensation range for each role. The combined salary range for this position is $113,100.00 - $245,000.00. The proposed salary range for the Senior level is $113,100.00 - $185,200.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 15%. For the AVP level is $149,500.00 - $245,000.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 20%.
