Managing Trial Attorney - Workers' Comp – Nationwide
Nationwide's Legal team is seeking a Managing Trial Attorney to lead a team of attorneys and paralegales, with a preferred concentration in Workers' Compensation. The position will be in a hybrid work environment with potential for remote work depending on location.
Overview
Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) is a national team with approximately 40 offices across six regions. As a Managing Trial Attorney (MTA), you will co-lead an office within a region, influence the office’s reputation, performance, and health, and work with the office lead MTA (8-2) on staffing, case assignments, quality of service, budgeting, workflow, and associate development. You may supervise trial attorneys, paralegals, and/or support staff, and there may be limited opportunities to directly handle cases.
Key Responsibilities
Implements and leads all aspects of NTD standard methodologies, processes and guidelines, providing training as needed. Partners with National Practice Group Associate Vice Presidents on performance matters and identifies opportunities to increase attorney proficiency in niche and commercial practice areas.
Maintains and promotes good relationships with clients and claims management.
May lead attorney, paralegal, and/or support staff performance and efficiency for the assigned office. Reviews and may assign work, monitors quality and efficiency, and is responsible for development, coaching and feedback, training and mentoring of individual associates. Assesses case performance on open and closed files of direct reports; seeks feedback from claims partners and the office lead MTA (8-2). May maintain a case load, ideally no more than 10 cases.
Assists with preparing various business reports to manage the office. Reviews and analyzes trends and makes recommendations to the lead MTA (8-2) regarding short-term and long-term decisions.
Co-manages and coordinates all administrative functions, including expense management, for the office. Collaborates with business operations to ensure administration services meet acceptable levels.
Monitors and responds to office growth demands or reductions in workforce, including staffing, facility and technology needs. Plans and coordinates projects regarding systems and process changes.
Other Responsibilities
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationship – Reports to Managing Trial Attorney (8-2). Manages a team of attorneys, paralegals and/or support staff. Composition and number of reports vary by office.
Qualifications
Education: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
License/Certification: Active license in the state where the position is located.
Experience: Typically 10+ years of relevant civil litigation, trial experience, and jury trial experience as lead counsel; management experience required.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Expertise in highly complex matters of law; excellent written and verbal communication; strong negotiation skills; analytical and legal capabilities; creative problem solving; computer literacy; strong time management and organizational skills; ability to train and develop staff; decision-making to set priorities; ability to coordinate complex projects; strong leadership and interpersonal skills; adherence to corporate and NTD policies and ethical rules; ability to work with all levels of management.
Job Conditions
Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt).
Working Conditions: Normal office environment with frequent travel and possible extended hours.
