Neurosurgery Coder

Overview We are looking for a certified medical coder with experience in neurosurgical procedures, including craniotomy and spine surgeries. The ideal candidate will have completed a coding certificate program accredited by AAPC or AHIMA (e.g., CPC, CCS, CPC-H, CCS-P, CCS-H, RHIA, RHIT), and possess at least four (4) years of coding experience, with two (2) years specifically in neurosurgical coding. Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines is essential, along with the ability to translate operative notes into billable services. Experience working in teaching facilities is highly valued, as this role involves collaboration with residents and fellows.
Responsibilities
Code and abstract procedural (CPT) and diagnosis (ICD-10) codes for physician services, ensuring accurate and compliant documentation.
Review physician documentation in the electronic medical record for completeness and accuracy to enable proper code assignment.
Provide feedback to physicians on documentation discrepancies and trends, offering education on improvement opportunities.
Collaborate with physicians to ensure timely completion of attestations in medical records.
Input encounter data into the practice management system and assume full responsibility for charge capture, coding, and charge entry of all assigned surgical cases.
Resolve edits and denials, release encounters for billing, and handle high-complexity coding tasks.
Monitor medical records to ensure documentation complies with hospital and payer policies and maintain knowledge of payer-specific coding guidelines, medical terminology, modifier usage, NCCI edit conventions, and healthcare billing and reimbursement standards.
Qualifications
Certified medical coder with AAPC or AHIMA credentials (e.g., CPC, CCS, CPC-H, CCS-P, CCS-H, RHIA, RHIT).
At least four (4) years of coding experience, with two (2) years in neurosurgical coding.
Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
Ability to translate operative notes into billable services.
Experience in teaching facilities and collaboration with residents and fellows is highly valued.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70,000.00 - $75,000.00/yr.
