Overview Toole Design Group in Boston, MA is hiring an experienced full-time Principal Civil Engineer with a focus on final design construction plan development and corridor modeling. This role leads an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure, from roadway reconstructions and urban streetscapes to signature trail projects, while emphasizing safe streets and sustainable multimodal projects.

Responsibilities A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure across a range of contexts, from urban roadway reconstructions and streetscapes to suburban and rural projects that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You will use AutoCAD to fulfill production work as needed and supervise others doing that production work. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and responding to questions during construction to ensure high-quality outcomes.
You will work with clients and colleagues from various disciplines, delivering projects to construction. You will play a key role in implementing the firm\'s quality initiatives and supporting business development and project pursuits. You will be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects in a constantly evolving industry.
Salary : We are targeting a salary range of $175,000-$200,000 for this position.
Qualifications Requirements:
A Professional Engineering license in MA (other Northeast states a plus)
A bachelor\'s or master\'s degree in civil engineering, or relevant field
At least 15 years of relevant engineering experience
Preferred:
At least 5 years serving in a project manager or design lead role, preferably for MA or other northeast-based clients, with a track record of delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget
Broad knowledge in civil engineering with experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling, and design of accessible public spaces
Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure using software such as HydroCAD or HydroFlow
Experience developing construction documents and providing construction management services
Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape/hardscape layout
Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
Fit:

Work Schedule This full-time position typically operates on a hybrid schedule of 40 hours per week, with 2–3 days in the office. We provide flexibility and equipment to work from home up to two days per week. Our Boston office is located in Downtown Crossing, near Boston Common and major transit lines. Travel within New England for public engagement activities may be required.
