Job Description The Principal Cloud Architect is a role of technical expertise, influence, and leadership. The individual will ensure best practices and well-engineered architecture across the department, lead major process and system changes, and solve critical issues. They will also foster a positive culture based on WGU Leadership Principles.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Utilize AI (LLMs, Agentic, MCP, etc.) to increase infrastructure modification efficiency.
Design and implement cloud architectures with a strategic approach.
Participate in architectural reviews and provide analysis feedback.
Plan hardware platform design, identify components, and develop system solutions.
Analyze systems to identify issues and develop solutions.
Mentor and train engineers on DevOps and CI/CD methodologies.
Support product teams in testing, validation, and deployment activities.
Ensure systems are built on HA architecture with native Backup/DR support within RTO/RPO targets.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Willingness to travel to client locations.
Expertise in AWS services and distributed computing environments.
Experience with highly available enterprise deployments.
Proficiency in Infrastructure automation (Terraform, shell scripting, PowerShell).
Strong Linux and Windows system administration skills in Cloud or Virtualized environments.
Experience leading cloud operations, monitoring, and alerting.

Provide solutions for complex technical issues and understand program risks.
Problem Solving & Decision Making: Work independently towards goals; lead project teams and initiatives.
Guide leadership and develop technical talent.

Influence senior leadership on strategic technical matters.
Leadership: Guide, coach, and train employees; manage large projects involving cross-functional teams.
Job Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
University Degree or equivalent experience.
Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:
6+ years IT workload experience.
3+ years in AWS services (VPC, DNS, IAM, EC2, ECS, EKS, RDS, S3).
3+ years in configuration management (CloudFormation, Terraform).
3+ years automation experience (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation).
3+ years governance tools experience (AWS Config, Inspector).
AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Solutions Architect Professional (candidates without certifications must obtain within 6 months).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience designing cloud infrastructure solutions and leading technical discussions.
Expertise in cloud cost optimization.
Experience with SDLC and Agile methodologies.
Knowledge of compliance and risk management (security, PCI, HIPAA, etc.).
Proficiency in JSON and YAML.
Physical Requirements: Sitting at a desk and working on a computer for prolonged periods.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
