Security Engineer

Northeastern University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Security Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Information Security Manager , this role involves strengthening the university's security posture, operational procedures, and control environment across our global campus network. The Security Engineer will collaborate with various departments to implement and maintain security policies, technologies, and controls. This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence at least three days a week to foster collaboration, teamwork, and engagement with staff and students. In-office work enhances problem-solving and team synergy, contributing to our collective success. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. The university is unable to sponsor work visas for this role. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or Computer Science or equivalent experience. Experience with Microsoft environment , especially Azure/M365 and M365 security suite . Deep understanding of cybersecurity controls such as malware protection, firewalls, IDS/IPS, content filtering, encryption, and log management. Hands-on experience with security tools like SIEM , SOAR , IDS/IPS , endpoint security, and security gateways, especially Sentinel , Defender , Intune , Nessus , Palo Alto Panorama . Proficiency in scripting and automation with PowerShell and Python . Self-motivated, detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple priorities independently. Strong communication skills for producing policies, procedures, risk assessments, and audit responses. Preferred Qualifications Certifications such as CISSP , CISM , CySA+ , CASP+ , Security+ , or GIAC . Experience with digital forensics . Familiarity with NIST frameworks , especially NIST 800-171 . Previous experience in higher education . Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities Collaborate with IT Services and other departments to analyze and enhance security controls. Investigate security incidents, perform root cause analysis, and document actions taken. Maintain logging and alerting systems, reducing false positives/negatives. Ensure projects comply with security policies and standards. Conduct security risk assessments of systems and processes. Review firewall rules and work with cloud teams on access controls. Address Purview DLP violations and participate in designing security hardware/software. Compensation Range: $86,490 - $122,164 (dependent on experience and qualifications).
