Overview An AV Design Engineer’s main function is to provide presales support by acting as a technical consultant to the sales force, generating functional system descriptions, block flow diagrams and equipment lists to enable generation of customer proposals. The AV design engineer reviews bids, performs site walks and evaluations, and uses that information to design a functioning system through drawings, bill of materials, and scopes of work. The Design Engineer will also work with the project implementation team to ensure the original design is delivered properly and may be required to travel to locations to finalize configurations. A Design Engineer is also leveraged by the post sales team for project engineering and ongoing project consultation; helping in install, configure, test, and troubleshoot audio visual equipment such as projectors, cameras, microphones, and sound system components. The position will be based out of our Union City, CA Office and projects could occur anywhere in the country. Balanced in office, remote, and onsite work. Responsibilities Responsible for the technical design of a project; translating customer requirements and working with the account manager and customer to identify the correct equipment and how it connects. Review pre-construction design and documentation. Aid with technical design and the level of effort needed by estimating hours and highlighting logistical challenges for the sales team to consider while pricing the opportunity. Generate functional system descriptions and block diagrams. Identify all cabling and miscellaneous material needs. Work with CAD and other drawing software to build a design package. Build a bill of materials that includes all wiring, components, and labor. Lead and mentor the team while also working alongside to deliver a working audio-visual design. May work in AV project implementation including pulling cables, terminating connectors, cable testing, equipment troubleshooting and some configuration knowledge for AV equipment. May help in terminating connectors for different types of cables (e.g., Cat6, Cat6a, SDI, audio cables, RS-232); rack construction, pulling cable, and equipment installation. Support the implementation team in installation of racks, projectors, monitors, and related mounts, and hardware on walls or ceilings for projectors, displays and wireless microphones. Use ladders and perform confined-space work as needed with appropriate safety equipment. Ensure each system’s physical completeness aligns with installation drawings. Handle other duties as assigned by management. Understanding and configuration of networking equipment. Up to 75% travel within the continental United States. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements Must possess at least a high school diploma or GED equivalency. A formal education in electronics or a related field is preferred. CAD and related drawing software is a requirement. Ability to work in Microsoft Word to write scopes of work. Ability to work in Microsoft Excel to build material lists. Must have 2 years of experience with commercial audio visual. Strong experience in installing mounts and hardware for projectors, displays, cameras and others. Excellent knowledge about cable types, connectors, and terminations. Some knowledge about Crestron 101 and Basics of Crestron. CTS, CTS-I or CTS-D are preferred. Some experience working with video conferencing (Zoom, Teams, Polycom, or Cisco) systems is strongly preferred. Dante Certifications (Levels I, II and III). Network Certifications (CCNA) or equivalent is preferred. Crestron programming experience is preferred. Fiber termination is strongly preferred. Manufacturers/Technology Platforms Smart interactive touch panels (ClearTouch and Panasonic, etc.). Wireless microphones, speakers: Shure, Sennheiser, QSC, etc. Displays by Samsung, LG, NEC, Sharp. Projectors by Epson, NEC, Christie Digital, Panasonic, Digital Projection, etc. Screens by Da-Lite, Draper Planar Physical and Mental Requirements Must be able to sit, stand, stoop and bend for extended periods. Self-motivated, positive in approach, professional and capable of contributing to project process improvements. Promote the company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners. Act as the company liaison for interface with customer representatives. Proven problem-solving, critical thinking, and strong reading, writing, and oral presentation skills; communication skills are required. Ability to work at heights, on a ladder and in confined spaces; lift up to 70 pounds and move up to 75 pounds. Ability to see and distinguish colors, read small print, and hear audible signals. Ability to travel within the branch/region as needed. Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and creative thinking abilities. Interact professionally with employees, customers, and colleagues. PC proficient (comfortable navigating a computer). Good knowledge of MS Office Suite.
