Overview
As a Senior Counsel in the R&D Innovation Legal group, you will support AbbVie's R&D organization in navigating enterprise-critical issues in an evolving legal and regulatory environment as we work to bring new, innovative products to patients. This role supports pipeline strategies to develop next-generation assets to improve the standard of care for patients. A successful candidate will be motivated to address and solve emerging issues with a strategic, creative, business-oriented approach and provide expert counsel on decisions impacting long-term pipeline strategies.
Responsibilities
Develop and provide strategic counsel to senior leaders within the R&D and corporate strategy organizations on legal and regulatory issues that impact pipeline development, government agency engagement, and product innovation. A technical degree is preferred to advise on intersections between law and scientific/innovation approaches to drug development.
Embed within the Specialty and/or Aesthetics therapeutic areas to contribute as a key member of disease-area strategy teams responsible for long-term R&D and innovation strategies, focusing on pipeline development and FDA/IRA considerations when assessing strategic approaches. This is not a role focused on FDA advertising and promotional considerations.
Educate other AbbVie legal departments and business stakeholders on emerging laws, regulations, and industry trends impacting the AbbVie pipeline and R&D early-stage discovery and product development.
Proactively identify highly complex legal issues related to assigned matters, develop creative and alternative solutions, and implement resolution.
Adopt a business-oriented and creative approach to problem solving.
Identify unmet needs and future legal issues and proactively propose strategies to optimize outcomes and results for the company in complex areas of law, business, and technology.
Advise senior leadership and be recognized by clients as an expert in the substantive area and a trusted advisor.
Qualifications
Juris Doctorate; active bar admission in at least one U.S. state; professional licensing requirements of the practicing state must be met. A technical degree in life sciences or related subject is preferred.
Minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience (in-house at a pharmaceutical company, in a life sciences practice at a nationally recognized law firm, or as a government attorney, or any combination).
Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical laws and regulations impacting drug development, rather than promotional considerations, to assist business clients in a highly regulated landscape.
Experience advising on the Inflation Reduction Act and the Medicare Drug Pricing Program is a plus.
Excellent executive presentation skills and ability to present complex information accurately and concisely to senior leaders.
Ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams collaboratively; adaptable to changing priorities.
This is a hybrid opportunity open to individuals located near one of AbbVie's offices in North Chicago, IL; Irvine, CA; Florham Park, NJ; or Massachusetts.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation for this role, based on the job grade. Individual compensation will depend on factors including geographic location and may be modified at the Company's discretion, consistent with applicable law.
