This role manages a large marketing team as well as the ATC Activation Engagement team and Patient Educator field team. This role reports to the Vice President of the US Heme Business Unit. Job Description
General Summary:
The Senior Director, US Heme Marketing, Activation Strategy and Patient Education leads the Marketing team for the US Heme Business Unit, supporting gene therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT). This individual is accountable for understanding the market landscape and Vertex’s position within the market, actively contributing to defining the strategic and performance goals of the portfolio, and tracking performance against those goals. This role manages a large marketing team as well as the ATC Activation Engagement team and Patient Educator field team. This role reports to the Vice President of the US Heme Business Unit. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of impact in US commercial roles, demonstrated success in leading and developing high performing teams, and the ability to operate with a strong sense of urgency and thrive in a fast-paced, innovation-focused environment.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
Develops the portfolio strategy, and oversees creation of brand strategies and brand lifecycle activities
Partners with and supports marketing team members and cross functional partners to help shape the brand strategy, segment the market, develop messaging, and support the launch our investigational therapy
Generates and consolidates key insights across HCPs and patient stakeholders (through market research, ad boards, etc.)
Engages with the HCP and KTL community and other key customers for transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) and sickle cell disease (SCD), including both transplant surgeon/staff and referring hematologists, to understand community challenges and opportunities.
Oversees development and implementation of strategic and tactical plans for brand(s)
Provides input into forecasting assumptions, both short term and long term
Leads the Authorized Treatment Center (ATC) onboarding strategy and execution, ensuring engagement with appropriate treatment centers based on business need
Leads the Patient Educator field team and supports development of local market strategies
Leads team to create all commercialization campaigns including unbranded disease education and branded patient and HCP campaigns
Leads the development of strong partnerships and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support business goals
Serves as the cross-functional launch lead for any label expansions
Collaborates with Vertex external communications review committee to approve materials for external use with customers
Manages agency partners and team to ensure on budget and timely deliverables
Operates with a sense of urgency and creates a culture of accountability among the team
Role models and instills a culture of compliance focused on ethics and integrity in all we do

Knowledge And Skills
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; comfortable engaging with diverse audiences ranging from cross-functional colleagues & senior leaders to HCP customers & patient communities
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-driven, environment within a growing business unit where we are concurrently learning & building as we drive towards product launch
Experience managing external partners
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage initiatives that require collaboration across multiple functional areas
Demonstrated understanding of the legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements common to the pharmaceutical industry, including pre- and post-approval activities, and ability to model expected behavior for the team
An entrepreneurial spirit, courage to ask, “how might we?” and “why?” and an ability to successfully challenge status quo to develop innovative creative solutions to complex problems.
Strong written communication skills, presentation delivery, and interpersonal skills to be effective in a team environment
A solid compliance mindset and demonstrated integrity on the job
Strong analytical skills, ability to derive insights from customer and internal team engagements
Ability to manage up and across an organization; can adeptly identify when/what information to share with leadership and/or cross-functional stakeholders at critical timepoints
Experience with budget management
Ability to travel up to 20%
Education And Experience
Bachelor's degree
12+ years of combined educational/work experience in marketing, consulting or agency experience in healthcare/biopharmaceuticals, or an equivalent combination of experience and education
Experience working with and or developing tactics for diverse audiences and complex marketplaces
Launch and/or label expansion experience
Experience managing a team; field leadership experience highly desirable
Pay Range
$225,600 - $338,400
Disclosure Statement
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
