Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace.About the Role:As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Embedded Payroll team, you will influence the team and broader organization while delivering in a complex Ruby on Rails codebase and guiding others to deliver a reliable payroll platform.About the Team:Gusto Embedded Payroll is a platform that allows developers to embed payroll directly into their own software using our APIs. Our vision is to enable anyone to build the best payroll product for their end customers, powering payroll for small and medium businesses across industries including vertical SaaS, fintech, and neobanks.Responsibilities (day-to-day):Identify and solve high-impact problems involving technical and organizational complexity that require cross-domain coordination.Engage directly with developer-customers to deliver a remarkable payroll product.Ship code that is clean, tested, and performant.Mentor and raise the technical bar across the organization by providing guidance.Inform and maintain best practices for reliability and observability for the team.Troubleshoot and resolve production issues.Qualifications:12+ years of professional software development experience with a track record of impact at scale.Proven ability to lead company-wide engineering initiatives and contribute to scaling engineering organizations.Ruby and Rails expert.Experience with large, complex codebases and multiple abstraction layers.Design and build of platforms, services, and APIs with emphasis on reliability, scalability, and performance.History of mentoring engineers, elevating technical standards, and guiding teams through ambiguous problems and competing priorities.Ability to connect technical decisions to business priorities and communicate tradeoffs to stakeholders.Our cash compensation for this role is targeted at $185,000-$205,000/yr in Denver and most remote locations, and $220,000-$240,000/yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and may vary from the amounts listed above.Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto’s subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
