Senior Trial Attorney - Workers' Comp (Remote)
Location: Newport Beach Trial Division office; position is fully remote.
Overview: Nationwide's Legal team supports a Fortune 100 insurance company with a focus on delivering extraordinary care to customers. The Senior Trial Attorney will be responsible for primarily covering NorCal venues with Workers' Compensation experience preferred. This role reports to the Managing Trial Attorney and involves lead counsel responsibilities, collaboration with a larger team, and a strong emphasis on proactive case management and use of technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate trial advocacy skills independently as lead counsel or as part of a team, delivering high-quality legal services in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division guidelines and client expectations.
- Operate with minimal managerial oversight, guided by the Managing Trial Attorney and NTD Leadership.
- Utilize technology effectively and collaborate with support staff to ensure efficient case management.
- Stay informed about changes in law, local rules, and procedural requirements affecting liability and recovery litigation in assigned jurisdictions.
- Maintain subject matter expertise for all NTD concentrations and be willing to develop additional concentrations as required.
- Provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations, promptly updated and communicated to clients and claims.
- Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with key claims and legal stakeholders; expand case referral opportunities within the enterprise.
- Communicate effectively, meeting client and internal expectations in written and verbal form across jurisdictions.
- Mentor junior attorneys and NTD staff, modeling engagement, coaching, and collaboration.
Note: May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Reports to Managing Trial Attorney.
Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- License/Certification: Active license in the state where the position is located.
- Experience: Typically more than eight years of relevant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation.
- Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Significant litigation experience in P&C insurance defense or subrogation; strong written and verbal communication; collaborative; strong negotiation and analytical skills; ability to adapt to legal and technological changes; excellent time management; leadership and mentorship capabilities; adherence to ethical standards and corporate policies.

- Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)
- Working Conditions: Office environment with potential remote work; frequent travel and occasional overnight travel; extended hours may be required; valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.

Salary information: The national salary range for Sr Trial Attorney is $124,000.00–$238,000.00; expected starting salary range is $134,000.00–$202,000.00. Salary is determined by factors including skills, education, and location.
