Senior Underwriter - Commercial Surety (Hybrid or Remote) We are seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our Surety team. This role can be hybrid in Anaheim, CA or remote in the Southwest region of the United States. Responsibilities Under technical direction and within underwriting authority, review complex risks to determine acceptance of an application. Determine selection or rejection of new and/or renewal business using underwriting rules and guidelines, manual rating rules, and insurance laws and regulations. Analyze quality and quantity of risks written and prepare reports accordingly. Monitor and evaluate results of assigned producers and territory; recommend and implement action plans for improvement of underwriting results. Coach or mentor newer or less-experienced underwriters and assistants as needed. Manage a profitable book of business by evaluating results, conducting portfolio reviews, and developing integrated pictures of profitability drivers (growth, retention, and profitability); implement action plans. Underwrite new and renewal business, evaluate exposures from multiple sources (applications, reports, inspections, credit reports, etc.), and make decisions within authority level in partnership with the underwriting team. Execute underwriting strategy, including portfolio management and self-audits; ensure compliance with state laws and company guidelines. Develop strong relationships with producers to promote growth, retention, and profitability; determine strategy for account management and agency planning. Collaborate with claims, actuary, and risk control teams to better service producers and accounts. Gather and analyze competitor and producer information to inform pricing, appetite, and product decisions. Collaborate with team to manage work inventories and production activities; document files and reports using automated desktop systems and tools. Travel to key producers/accounts as needed and participate in industry events or committees; participate in account management and marketing meetings as appropriate. Provide training and mentoring to less experienced underwriters and underwriting assistants. Stay informed of industry, territory, and surety bond trends. The expertise you bring Bachelor's degree Minimum of 3-5 years Commercial Surety Bond experience AFSB preferred Our salary ranges are determined by location, role, experience, and skillset. Typical base salary range for this position is $92,000 – $129,000, based on factors mentioned. For candidates in San Francisco, CA and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $116,000 - $135,000.
