This position will report to Newport Beach. The position is hybrid but could be remote depending on the candidate's location. The attorney will primarily cover Boards in Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Workers' Compensation experience is preferred.
No billable hours. 1:1 attorney/paralegal ratio.

Nationwide Trial Division is a national team with approximately 40 offices across six regions in the United States. Our Senior Trial Attorneys are seasoned litigation attorneys with significant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation. As a Senior Trial Attorney, you'll represent clients under both commercial and personal lines insurance policies independently as lead counsel, as well as be part of a larger team as needed. Caseloads typically include a mix of cases varying in complexity, severity, product lines, and specialized concentrations, throughout all courts and agencies in the assigned jurisdictions. You’ll be expected to maintain a highly productive case volume that reflects our commitment to innovative thinking, effective collaboration, embracing technology, and a highly organized and proactive approach to case management.
Key Responsibilities Demonstrate trial advocacy skills independently as lead counsel or as part of a team, demonstrating efficiency, proactive case management, work ethic, and high-quality work product in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) standards, claims, and client expectations.
Require minimal oversight and guidance from the Managing Trial Attorney and NTD Leadership in all core duties and responsibilities.
Effectively utilize technology and collaborate with support staff to ensure efficient case management.
Stay informed about changes in law, technology, local rules, and procedural requirements that impact liability and recovery litigation strategies in the jurisdictions where you practice.
Possess and perform with the subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills required for all NTD concentrations, and be willing to develop and learn additional concentrations as needed.
Provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations, updating and communicating these promptly to clients and claims.
Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with key colleagues within the Office of the Chief Legal Officer, claims partners, and within the legal and insurance industries in your jurisdictions.
Leverage relationships to build and enhance NTD’s reputation and expand case referral opportunities.
Communicate effectively, proactively understanding and meeting client, claims, and internal communication expectations in both written and verbal form.
Serve as a mentor to junior attorneys and NTD staff, providing guidance, training, and serving as a role model in engagement, coaching, feedback, efficiency, attitude, and collaboration.
Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Reporting Relationships Reports to: Managing Trial Attorney
Typical Skills and Experiences Education: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
License/Certification/Designation: Maintain an active license in the state where the position is located.
Experience: Typically more than eight years of relevant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Significant litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation, effective communication skills, collaborative work ethic, negotiation skills, analytical and legal expertise, resourcefulness, adaptability to legal and technological changes, strong organizational skills, decision-making ability, leadership qualities, and adherence to ethical standards and policies.
Additional criteria, including leadership skills and competencies, may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval from the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Usually a normal office environment, with potential for remote work based on needs. Frequent travel and occasional overnight travel are expected. Extended hours may be necessary. Valid driver’s license required.

Salary Range The national salary range for Sr. Trial Attorney is $124,000 - $238,000. The expected starting salary range is $134,000 - $202,000, based on skills, experience, and location.
