Wärtsilä Energy Storage is seeking a visionary and experienced Vice President of Software Engineering to lead our global software and data science organization. This position will be located in Herndon, VA and follow a hybrid work model. This role is responsible for driving the strategic vision, architecture, and execution of software solutions that power our energy storage systems, grid optimization tools, and customer-facing digital services. You will lead a high-performing team across multiple time zones and disciplines, including cloud and edge computing, embedded systems, data science, and control theory.

Key Responsibilities

Define and execute the software engineering and data science strategy aligned with Wärtsilä's energy transition goals. Lead and scale a global team of ~90 professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, agility, and engineering excellence. Oversee the development and continuous improvement of the GEMS Digital Energy Platform and other mission-critical software products. Partner with product management, hardware engineering, customer success, and other business units to deliver integrated, customer-centric solutions. Champion the adoption of modern technologies, cloud-native architectures, edge computing, and real-time data systems. Ensure software quality, security, scalability, and compliance with industry standards and best practices. Monitor performance metrics and ensure timely delivery of high-impact software and data solutions. Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and strategic technology partnerships. Represent Wärtsilä in industry forums and with key customers as a leader in energy software innovation.

Qualifications

15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in executive leadership roles. Proven track record of leading large-scale software development in energy, IoT, or industrial automation sectors. Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures, edge computing, and real-time data systems. Experience with energy markets, grid operations, or energy storage systems is highly desirable. Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; MBA is a plus.
