Overview Job Description
The Virology (HIV) Regional Medical Scientific Director is a credentialed (MD, PhD, DNP, or PharmD) therapeutic and disease area expert who engages in scientific exchange and, when requested, research support with external scientific leaders and investigators. Virology RMSDs provide balanced, factual, scientific information about non-product areas of interest and respond to scientific questions from Scientific Leaders (SLs), including questions about our Company’s data. They are responsible for facilitating and developing peer-level relationships with external scientific leaders and investigators, and for supporting data generation activities for Company-sponsored trials and Investigator Study Programs as prioritized by R&D. They report to the Regional RMSD Team Leader – US Medical Affairs, Global Clinical Development, Research and Development (R&D).
Responsibilities Identify, establish and manage collaborative professional relationships with national, regional and clinical practice scientific leaders (SLs) and investigators to address scientific needs and provide access to medical and scientific information on therapeutic areas and Company data.
Conduct peer-level scientific discussions and maintain a reliable presence to ensure SLs have an R&D/Medical Affairs contact within the Company.
Engage in proactive non-product discussions regarding scientific issues (disease states, diagnosis, epidemiology, unmet medical need, population health) to enhance scientific discussions or inform R&D/GMA and HH strategy or research programs.
Facilitate appropriate scientific exchange of information with SLs, integrating knowledge with actionable insights to inform R&D and HH strategies.
Communicate external stakeholder opinions, insights and feedback on new data, clinical trends and the evolving vaccine landscape to Medical Affairs HQ teams to inform internal R&D strategies.
Represent R&D at scientific meetings and congresses and contribute to debriefs, insight discussions and postcongress reports.
Develop and execute territory plans in alignment with global Virology strategy.
Support data generation activities as requested by R&D leadership, including acting as the primary liaison to investigators interested in investigator-initiated research (MISP).
Identify potential investigators for phase II-IV programs and provide scientific support for R&D-sponsored trials as needed.
Provide in-depth scientific support to Health Systems teams within USMA.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of the assigned disease and therapeutic area through education, conference attendance, scientific workshops and review of key journals; fully comply with company policies, laws, regulations and ethical standards.
Education Minimum Requirement An advanced degree (MD, PhD, DNP or PharmD) relevant to Virology and requirements of the position.
Experience - Minimum Requirements A minimum of 3 years in the biotech/pharmaceutical or healthcare environment.
A minimum of 3 years of clinical and/or research experience (beyond degree) in Virology/HIV (or related field) with demonstrated scientific excellence.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking and presentation skills.
Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, overnight stays, and reside in the coverage region.
Skills Required Deep therapeutic competency and up-to-date knowledge in Virology.
Ability to network and partner with external customers, including scientific leaders, investigators, clinical practice leaders and affiliated institutions.
Ability to consolidate and understand complex data sets, plan and execute data analyses, summarize data and interpret results.
Knowledge of treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, FDA regulations, and ethical guidelines (e.g., OIG, HIPAA) relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.
Strong organizational skills to manage priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred capabilities Recognition for scientific excellence in Virology with contributions to clinical, academic or translational/basic research in Virology.
Experience in both clinical Virology and independent research/publications in Virology; desirable experience in late-stage clinical research as investigator or study personnel.
5+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience (MSL or related role) in Virology.
Prior experience within the coverage region and established relationships with Virology stakeholders.
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to handle challenges within scope of authority.
Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Location: Headquarters in Upper Gwynedd, PA; position remote with residency in the coverage region.
