Overview Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Healthcare & Research to work in the Office of the General Counsel, primarily within the Healthcare & Research practice group. The AGC will provide legal counsel across the research and academic medical center enterprise, including transactional and regulatory compliance support, and matters related to graduate medical education conducted through the School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The successful candidate will have relevant years of legal experience counseling on issues related to academic research, an understanding of regulatory requirements for the responsible conduct of research (including federally funded research), and strong drafting and negotiation skills for complex transactional agreements related to research.
OGC seeks an attorney who understands the collaborative nature of working in an academic institution and can contribute with a practical, energetic, and mission-focused approach.
Responsibilities
Provide legal guidance and support regarding compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to Johns Hopkins University's research activities, domestically and internationally.
Advise on a broad range of sponsored research issues, including animal and human subjects research, intellectual property, privacy, conflicts of interest, award compliance, research integrity, investigational drugs and devices, clinical trials, and related regulatory requirements.
Assist research administration offices in negotiating and administering sponsored research and drafting communications with government agencies, universities, foundations, and biotech/pharmaceutical companies, including sponsored research agreements, data use agreements, material transfer agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
Provide legal advice on research misconduct proceedings and review inquiry/investigation reports for legal sufficiency.
Interpret, draft, and revise policies and procedures; collaborate with the Compliance office to support research compliance matters.
Serve on relevant Johns Hopkins committees and provide legal counsel on committee work.
Handle other areas and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school with superior academic credentials.
Active membership in good standing in at least one state bar; eligibility to practice in Maryland.
Five or more years of relevant experience advising on transactional and regulatory compliance matters in an academic, nonprofit, or government setting or in a law firm serving large, complex clients.
Educational equivalency allowances as permitted by Johns Hopkins University policies.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience counseling on complex legal issues and compliance across healthcare and research activities.
Expertise drafting and negotiating complex contracts (e.g., sponsored research agreements, confidentiality agreements, clinical trial agreements, data use agreements, IP/licensing, material transfer agreements, MOUs, affiliations, and professional service agreements).
Willingness to learn new subject areas and implement new knowledge.
Strong customer service orientation with the ability to provide prompt and practical legal advice.
Excellent analytical skills, good judgment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
Clear, concise, and collegial communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion; strong self-awareness for escalation when appropriate.
Experience in a higher education or academic medical setting strongly preferred.

Salary: Starting range $135,900 – $238,400 annually (commensurate with experience)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
