SCI, the leading executive search firm in the real estate industry, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for a 45-year-old, family-owned developer/operator of affordable and market-rate multifamily housing, with a track record of transacting on twenty thousand units. The CHRO is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for day-to-day HR operations and driving people strategy for a mission-driven, family-owned real estate company. Reporting directly to the Principals, the CHRO will provide strategic vision for all aspects of the employee lifecycle, talent strategy, culture development, employee relations, and performance management, ensuring compliance with laws and internal policies. The CHRO currently has an HR Manager and Payroll direct reports. The firm has 100+ FTEs and is pivoting from a NYC-centric developer to a national, industry-leading firm, pursuing deals in 16 different states. As the organization grows, they will support the buildout of the HR team. Initially, the successful candidate must be hands-on and willing to lead all tactical HR functions while managing strategic initiatives. This role is hybrid, requiring 2 days/week in the office in White Plains, accessible via train from Grand Central. Key Responsibilities : Strategic Leadership Serve as advisor to COO and executive team on all employee and organizational matters. Define and implement a forward-looking, company-wide people strategy aligned with long-term goals. Foster a high-performance culture emphasizing accountability, inclusion, innovation, and collaboration. Lead change management and organizational transformation initiatives. Executive Collaboration & Company Impact Collaborate with division Heads to align HR with operational and financial strategies. Represent HR in executive planning, budgeting, and organizational design discussions. Provide strategic input on workforce planning, business growth initiatives, and cross-departmental functionality. Team Leadership Direct and develop the HR function, including staffing and budgeting. Ensure effective HR operations, compliance, and employee support services. Evaluate and enhance policies, systems, and service models to meet evolving organizational needs. HR Operations & Compliance Oversee day-to-day HR operations. Ensure compliance with laws, internal policies, and union agreements. Maintain accurate HR records. Employee Relations, Performance Management, & Talent Strategy Lead talent acquisition, succession planning, and leadership development. Serve as the first point of contact for employee concerns and workplace issues. Oversee performance management, coaching managers on evaluations, documentation, discipline, and feedback processes. Promote internal mobility and career development. Culture & Engagement Champion company culture, values, and DEI initiatives. Develop and oversee employee engagement programs such as stay interviews and events. Partner with stakeholders to improve employee experience, morale, and retention. Total Rewards & Compliance Oversight Ensure benefits support employee wellbeing and organizational priorities. Maintain compliance with labor laws and union contracts. Mitigate organizational risk through proactive policies and legal compliance. Qualifications : 15+ years of progressive HR leadership, including 5+ years in an executive role. Union experience required. Experience in real estate, affordable housing, or mission-driven organizations preferred. Strong knowledge of employment law, compliance, and strategic HR practices. Proven ability to lead and mentor HR professionals and build high-functioning teams. Executive presence with strong influencing skills and business acumen. Experience in family-owned or privately held businesses is a plus. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or HR certification (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR) strongly preferred.
