Director of Institutional Research at Stanford University (Institutional Research & Decision Support, Stanford, California)
Overview The Director of Institutional Research leads the institutional research function for Stanford University, exercising analytical leadership over research studies on the universitys performance, creation of dashboards and decision support tools, and reporting of core institutional metrics. The Director oversees reporting to governmental agencies and external bodies, establishes data definitions with the Data Governance Program Director, and collaborates with university leadership and stakeholders to provide timely, rigorous, and accurate reporting and analysis. The Director manages six institutional research analysts and works with IR&DS staff to foster a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
Proactively identify issues with the most value to the university and determine methodologies for collecting and analyzing data from multiple sources.
Create multi-year strategic plans for data access and findings to support decision-making and program evaluation.
Advise senior management on programmatic and policy development and provide input to university leadership on policies and practices.
Advise and consult on analytical efforts outside of the organization, including for other university units and peer consortia.
Drive collection of new data and refinement of existing data sources; ensure reliable and consistent data for ad hoc and longitudinal inquiries;
Design research plans and apply statistical or other techniques to analyze data.
Develop communication plans to present findings to stakeholders in an audience-appropriate format.
Establish quality assurance processes to ensure accuracy of findings.
Interact with senior university leaders, faculty, and staff with written summaries and/or presentations.
Collaborate with other organizations to gather data and seek external benchmarks to support proposed decisions.
Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve IR&DS goals, including hiring, coaching, and performance management of direct reports.
Minimum Requirements Education & Experience: Bachelors degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: advanced degree with seven years of relevant experience solving analytical problems using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Knowledge of data science, statistics, education research, or social science research. Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, planning, and change management skills. Advanced analytical and research skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proficiency with desk-based computer tasks; ability to manipulate and analyze complex, high-volume, high-dimensional data; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to influence, solve problems, troubleshoot, and manage projects; facilitation and collaboration skills; experience with SQL, R, and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau); advanced proficiency with statistical tools (SPSS, Stata, R, or similar). Subject matter expertise in higher education research, student analytics, or university planning; deep knowledge of university administrative organization, policies, and practices related to institutional research.

Physical/Other Requirements: May work extended hours during peak business cycles. Visa sponsorship is not available; applicants must be authorized to work in the US.
