Overview Harvard University IT at Harvard Business School (HBS) supports the mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. The Director, Network Engineering will lead the development of the overall network strategy and manage the execution of that plan, working with the EE&A management team to provide technical leadership, support, and network solutions for the HBS community.
The position is responsible for the wired and wireless campus network environment, which extends to multiple cloud environments and remote campuses. It involves developing and executing a multiyear network strategy aligned with business needs, while managing daily operations and projects.
Job Summary The Director, Network Engineering provides strategic and operational support to faculty and stakeholders to support HBS’s mission. The role reports to the Senior Managing Director, Enterprise Engineering & Architecture (EE&A).
Responsibilities Direct the network team and vendors’ staff to support daily operations and project deliverables
Provide network technology leadership, vision, and solutions addressing business needs, partnering with IT colleagues and HBS departments
Develop, document, maintain, and manage a multiyear network strategy including a lifecycle management program
Develop and communicate annual operating and multiyear capital budgets aligned with the network strategy, and manage activities to align with this budget
Ensure ongoing documentation of critical network and telecommunications assets, processes, and procedures
Manage vendor relationships and contracts for hardware, software, and services, and ensure execution against these contracts
Collaborate with the University’s enterprise networking team to align strategies and services for network and voice needs
Contribute to cloud planning to monitor and manage network reliability and performance in a hybrid multi-cloud environment
Participate in university and school governance committees to align network solutions with future business goals
Lead by example, set clear goals and training objectives for team members, and reinforce HBS IT values
Build strong relationships with HBS departments to develop innovative solutions using industry best practices
Ensure HBS systems and stored information are secure according to Harvard’s policies and standards
Complete other responsibilities as assigned
Working Conditions Additional support outside of regularly scheduled hours may be required
Must be available by personal cell phone during business hours and occasionally off-hours (stipend provided)
Must participate in a shared 24x7x365 on-call rotation with other IT staff
Qualifications Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Strong working knowledge of network technologies and cloud connectivity; experience planning, designing, and implementing large-scale network environments
Technical command of Cisco network switches, routers and protocols, wireless deployments, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, and fiber deployments
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to varied audiences
Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills
Experience leading and motivating a technical staff
Enterprise networking experience in a higher education setting
Exposure to networking connectivity into cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, Oracle)
Infrastructure experience including design, lifecycle management, planning, and operations
Experience developing and managing operational and capital budgets and vendor contracts
Certificates and Licenses:
CCNP preferred
CCIE (Security, Enterprise Infrastructure, and/or Wireless) preferred
Additional Information Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week
Compensation Range: $150,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience

Work Location: Hybrid position; onsite at Boston, MA campus a minimum of 3 days per week
Work Format Details
This position is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options. Remote work must be performed within Harvard Registered Payroll States. Visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Candidates should expect to discuss onsite requirements during the interview process.
