Overview Job Description: The Director, Network Engineering at Harvard Business School (HBS) IT provides strategic and operational leadership to the network engineering function, aligning with the EE&A (Enterprise Engineering & Architecture) strategy to support HBS’s mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world.
As part of the EE&A management team, the Director collaborates with campus stakeholders to deliver technical leadership, support, and network solutions across the campus, cloud environments, and remote campuses. The position oversees wired and wireless campus networks and develops a multiyear network strategy that aligns with business needs and manages daily operations and projects.
The Director advises HBS IT and departments on network stability and architecture, develops roadmaps and budgets for network and telecommunications needs, and drives growth and capabilities for a large, complex network environment.
Job-Specific Responsibilities Direct the network team and vendors’ staff in support of daily operational work and project deliverables
Provide network technology leadership and solutions that address business needs, partnering with IT colleagues and HBS departments
Develop, document, maintain, and manage a multiyear network strategy with a lifecycle management program
Develop and communicate annual operating and multiyear capital budgets aligned with the network strategy; manage activities to align with this budget
Ensure ongoing documentation of critical network and telecommunications assets, processes, and procedures
Manage vendor relationships and contracts for procurement of hardware, software, and services and ensure execution against contracts
Collaborate with the University’s enterprise networking team to align strategies and services for network and voice services
Contribute to cloud planning to monitor and manage network reliability and performance in a hybrid multi-cloud environment
Participate in governance committees to align network solutions with future business goals
Lead by example, set goals and training objectives for team members, and reinforce HBS IT values
Build relationships with HBS departments to develop innovative solutions using industry best practices
Ensure HBS systems and data are secure in line with Harvard policies and industry standards
Complete other responsibilities as assigned
Working Conditions Additional support outside of regularly scheduled hours may be required (early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays)
Must be available by personal cell phone during business hours and occasionally off-hours (stipend provided)
Must participate in a shared 24x7x365 on‑call rotation with other IT staff
Qualifications Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
The following are preferred:
Strong working knowledge of network technologies and cloud connectivity; extensive experience designing and implementing large-scale network environments
Technical command of Cisco switches/routers, wireless deployments, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, and fiber deployments
Ability to explain complex technical concepts to varied audiences
Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills
Proven ability to manage a technical staff and lead, influence, and motivate others
Enterprise networking experience in a higher education setting
Experience with networking connectivity to cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Oracle)
Infrastructure design and deployment, lifecycle management, planning, and operations
Experience developing and managing operational and capital budgets and vendor contracts
Certificates and Licenses:
CCNP or higher preferred
CCIE certificate in Security, Enterprise Infrastructure, and/or Wireless preferred
Additional Information Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week
Compensation Range/Rate: $150,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience

Other Information: This is a hybrid position with remote and on-site work at the Boston campus. Staff are expected to be on-site a minimum of 3 days per week; specific onsite days are determined by business needs and may change with notice.
Work Format This position is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options. All remote work must be performed within Harvard-regulated payroll states. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Eligibility for sponsorship will be determined prior to employment.
